New to HK? Been here ages but looking to switch up your usual haunts? With so many unreal venues in Hong Kong and a vibrant nightlife scene, choosing a place to go out can prove overwhelming. When we’re heading out for a night, there are a few boxes that need to be checked.

First, music is key. A killer sound system comes in second.Good vibes and atmosphere come in a close third. And let’s round out this list with a bumping dancefloor.

So whether you’re a Hong Kong nightlife veteran, new to the scene, or are in the need of a premade list to hand friends that come to visit, we comprised a list of HK hot spots that check all those aforementioned boxes. In no particular order, here are Electric Soul's top picks for Hong Kong nightlife.

宀 (Mihn) Club

Designated safe space and techno-haven, 宀 (Mihn) Club is an ultra-cool, super welcoming spot just outside of Central in Sheung Wan. With a core value of acceptance, all are welcome at Mihn regardless of gender, sexual identity, and race. 宀 is a Chinese radical meaning roof or shelter and the team hopes the name can be actualized, acting as a safe space, meeting grounds, and a roof over the heads of its community.

To enforce these anti-discriminatory, anti-judgemental, anti-harassment ideals, there is a strict no-photo policy inside the club. With a no dress code policy as well, club-goers are encouraged to come as they are and be who they are. The 100-capacity club is 90 percent dance floor. You’ll find both local and international acts behind the decks and pumping through their Funktion-One sound system. The party usually gets rocking around midnight, so come late, come as you are,  and feel free to feel free.

Social Room

From the guys that brought the underground gem Bassment (RIP) comes Social Room. This Central hotspot is a 2,100 square-foot loft-style space, with a third floor view. The DJs, smashing out underground beats, are perched atop a raised stage on the dancefloor. The space takes on the vintage vibes that were prevalent at Bassment. Brick walls and leather sofas paired with a killer sound system will have you melting into your seat. But the tunes will have you on your feet. Bands and DJs bring experimental, underground sounds that’ll have you dancing into the wee hours.

Bungalow

If you’re gearing up for a night and in a go big or go home kind of mood, Bungalow is your place. The 6000 square foot venue brings the glitz and glam you’d want for a special occasion or birthday. The décor is posh but the music is grimey good. Everything from the sound system to the lighting is state of the art. Pop bottles in a VIP booth or hit the dance floor with a cocktail. Bungalow wants you to have a good time, offering specials and happy hour deals every night.

oma

oma is a little club with big heart. Expertly curated sounds by music director Taku Hirayama guarantee your nights will be filled with only the best music and DJs. House, techno, underground dance, and hip hop fill the basement venue. With more watts per square foot than anywhere else in Hong Kong, dancing is inevitable. Follow the bass down the alleyway. Come early for happy hour and stay late (they’re open ‘til 5 am).

VOLAR

When it’s late in LKF, the only place to go is VOLAR. As all the other venues are winding down around 3 am, VOLAR is just ramping up. The unofficial local afterparty, VOLAR takes the party into the morning hours. Alternate between the two big rooms to get your fix of music genres. From techno to hip hop, electro, and r & b, everyone who comes to VOLAR can get their groove on. The interiors are a trippy wonderland. Mirrored hallways lead you to a colorful neon dance floor with a carousel. International and local DJs alike tear up the decks. Big names have included Diplo, Peter Van Hoesen, and Laurent Garnier.

The Music Room At Potato Head

Audiophiles gather ‘round. This one’s for you. Potato Head’s Music Room, tucked behind the restaurant and down a black-walled hallway, is an intimate listening space that boasts a vintage, yet killer sound system. Music director Johnny Hiller has the room stacked with over 6000 records. The laid back retro living room vibes create the perfect spot for an after-dinner cocktail. But don’t be fooled by the setup; Music Room turns into a late-night dance party with guaranteed good tunes always spinning.
