Organised by Reform Radio and their inhouse label, Rhythm Lab Records, Girls Just Wanna is an online event that focuses on up-and-coming female DJs in the music industry. Happening over Zoom on 8 March 2021, the event will run from 1pm to 6pm, featuring talks, workshops, and networking sessions with attendees, peers and industry veterans.

In line with International Women Day, the free-for-all event is open to all women, including cis and trans women and even non-binary people who are comfortable in a space revolving around the experiences of women. Besides highlighting female and non-binary artists, the event aims to go one step further.

Reform Radio’s Director Jemma Tanswell will open the event, and hopes that the event will empower aspiring DJs by connecting them to industry professionals who are not just DJs, but also experts in brand building to the distribution process. “It is important to us that we fight for the ideals of equality and empowerment that International Women’s Day highlights. Equally important, however, is our commitment to embodying this spirit for the remaining 364 days of the year. Our International Women’s Day event is a small but significant part of this mission statement and we hope that the skills and connections made will continue to benefit attendees throughout their journeys into the music industry."

In the male-dominated DJ industry which survives on networking, aspiring female DJs might find it hard to break into the scene. By creating contacts and sharing of experiences, Girls Just Wanna might be the step needed for some females the boost they need.

Music marketer Keey Hutchinson, who manages synth-pop powerhouse Hot Minute and Sound With Mike, and Jamz Supernova, a BBC Radio Xtra DJ and owner of Future Bounce Records, are just some of the guest speakers to look forward to. With the use of break-out rooms, participants will get to interact with the guest speakers in more intimate sessions.

Sign up for Girls Just Wanna via Eventbrite. Tickets are free, but spots are limited.
