about
A born entertainer with a burning desire to play music to people around the world, Sam Divine’s enigmatic sets are an effortless schooling in pure, unadulterated house. From her early days as the sole member of the Defected street team in Ibiza to fronting their radio show and now headlining some of the world’s biggest clubs and festivals, The First Lady of Defected, has become an intrinsic part of the UK house music scene.

The seeds of Sam’s DJ career can be traced back to a pair of belt drive turntables and a battered Numark mixer set up in her Mum’s shed; a pirate radio show broadcast from her bedroom using ‘borrowed’ equipment from the local college and MSN Messenger, and time spent expanding her musical knowledge working at Spin Central in her hometown of Weston-super-Mare and Chemical Records in Bristol. ~ Soundcloud

  • MACEO PLEX

Spain-based producer Eric Estornel initially reserved the name Maceo Plex for his festival-friendly house productions before gradually taking the project into a darker, more introspective direction. After establishing himself in the techno world for his work as Maetrik beginning in the early 2000s, and exploring more abstract electro and IDM as Mariel Ito around the middle of the decade, he began releasing some of his most accessible tracks under the Maceo Plex handle starting in 2009. Over the course of the following decade, the project evolved from deep, sexy house with prominent Chicago and Detroit influences (such as on debut full-length Life Index) to a significantly more dramatic sound (particularly the ambitious Solar). In addition to releasing singles and full-lengths on well-regarded labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Kompakt, and Minus, Maceo Plex has mixed volumes of the DJ-Kicks and Fabric series. ~ AllMusic

  • Eats Everything

Bristol, England DJ and producer Eats Everything started out spinning jungle and drum'n'bass. Over the years, the man born Daniel Pearce incorporated more bass-loaded house into his repertoire, crafting a party-starting sound the likes of Carl Cox. His non-stop party started in 2011 with his debut track, "Entrance Song" (Pets Records), a heartier and richer version of Disclosure's deep house. The Eats Everything EP followed on Dirtybird, and Pearce, preferring performing over studio time, continued with a series of consistent releases over the following years. A slew of honors helped move along his exposure, notably a few essential mixes for Pete Tong's BBC Radio 1 show, as well as the DJ Mag award for Best British DJ in 2012. In addition to filling dancefloors, he also left his mark on works by Adam F, Jamie Jones, X-Press 2, Four Tet, Skream, Sinead Harnett, and Disclosure. ~ AllMusic

A powerful fixture in the NYC scene for the past six years, she's cemented herself as one of the most distinctive techno DJs coming out of the U.S. in recent years. She has been at the forefront of a new generation of techno artists who find inspiration in the raw, innovative and rebellious spirit of old school techno. • Andy C

Andrew John Clarke is a British DJ and record producer and is co-founder of RAM Records, a pioneering label in the drum and bass genre. Andy C was a DJ in his own right but gained a strong reputation and more bookings off the back of the successful "Valley of the Shadows" track, an early drum and bass track that walked the line perfectly between hardcore and drum and bass just as the genres were starting to split. The track, created and released by Origin Unknown (made up of Andy C and Ant Miles)—often referred to as "31 Seconds" or "Long Dark Tunnel" because of the samples it incorporates—made use of a heavy bassline, bell samples and a rolling drum track to produce a popular, easy to recognise track that was easy to mix and became a favourite in dance floors at raves across the UK and beyond. The track was released as an EP in 1993[7] and has been remixed and re-released several times, and is widely recognised as one of the most influential drums and bass tunes of the early 90s.

It's been going on for nearly a decade: Under cover of darkness, Matthew Dear slips out of his usual guise as pop-music innovator and exorcises his dancefloor demons through his constantly shifting alter-ego, Audion. Over the years, Dear has steered the Audion sound from grime-flecked minimalism to sinewy funk to relentless floor-fillers and back, but Audion's core remains constant: an itchy forward momentum, an eye-popping visual aesthetic, and a dedication to high-class body music. Audion first appeared in 2004 with two EPs, Kisses and The Pong, which offered a harder-edged counterpoint to the crisp microhouse of Dear's eponymous tracks at the time. 2005's full-length Suckfish unveiled the full scope of the Audion sound, as tracks like "Just Fucking" and "Your Place or Mine" presented an aggressive, sonically serrated side of Matthew Dear few had seen before. In 2006, Audion's subversive club anthem “Mouth To Mouth”—an ever-ascending work of art with a distinctive "swarm of bees" climax—became the toast of that year's DEMF. That track, still in heavy rotation among the world's top DJs, was the pivot point, cementing Audion as a genuine force in the world of dance music. In 2009, Audion re-emerged with a retooled approach: seven sleek, propulsive singles—from the slow motorik pulse of "I Am the Car" to the hands-in-the-air energy of "Look At the Moon"—released over the course of the year, culminating in Hecatomb, Audion's acclaimed worldwide A/V tour. Since 2009, it's been relatively quiet in the Audion camp—two critically acclaimed Matthew Dear records and endless live-band tours notwithstanding. Regardless, the wait is over: Matthew Dear has reassumed the Audion mantle. 2013's Audion X retrospective—including Dear's hand-picked favorites from the last ten years along with two new singles—is just the beginning. A new full-length album and dazzling live A/V tour is in the works. If history is any indication, it's going to be a long night.

The BEIGE sound is anything but—they are known for smooth mixing and colorful, unpretentious sets that whip between genres and tempos: big melodies, big vocals, big Moods. Beyond the usual house-techno-disco touchpoints, expect to hear psychedelic gospel, leftfield club and ballroom, thizz-face electro and UK/global bass, sprinkled with cheeky pop references. Their dramatic approach has earned the support of dance music institutions including Hot Mass, Nowadays, Bossa Nova Civic Club, Elsewhere, and Charivari Festival. • Ben Klock

Berlin born DJ, producer and label owner Ben Klock is without a doubt one of the most significant characters in techno’s recent history. A resident at Berghain since its opening in 2004, he has been able to leave his mark on the club’s unique sound, in turn the special space influenced Klock’s approach as a DJ and producer as well. Playing techno sets full of hypnotic, deep and heavy grooves, releasing records on Ostgut Ton and last but not least the aesthetics of his own label Klockworks (founded in 2006), have earned him an excellent international reputation over the last few years. Supported by stringent and enthralling tracks, remixes for such diverse artists as Kerri Chandler, Martyn or Depeche Mode, the revered debut album “One” on Ostgut Ton and his Berghain mix, Ben Klock’s name is synonymous with the vitalization of an essential definition of techno.

  • Bonobo

Simon Green aka Bonobo is back with his sixth album – the masterful, magisterial “Migration” – is a record which cements his place in the very highest echelons of electronic music and beyond. By turns lush, manic, beautiful, melancholy, joyful, packed.. Bonobo’s last album, “The North Borders”, went Top 30 in the UK and was number 1 in the electronic charts in both the US and UK. In support, his 12-piece collective (over an 18 month period) played 175 shows across four continents and 30 countries, wowing a total audience of around 2 million people. In fact, Songkick reckoned him to be amongst the most travelled artists on the planet that year. The tour included two sell outs at the Sydney Opera House, an all-day festival at the Roundhouse culminating in a sold out show at Alexandra Palace (10k cap) plus a number of high profile festival slots. Over the course of five albums for the legendary label Ninja Tune, a myriad of tours, singles, remixes and production work for other artists, Bonobo has built a large, loyal and engaged global fanbase: over half a million album sales and over one hundred and fifty million streams on Spotify point to the levels of success achieved by this quiet, self-effacing man. Most recently, Bonobo curated an international series of Outlier events including a sold out all day festival at Tobacco Dock in London and further parties in Berlin, Madrid, Paris and New York. After the epic North Borders tour, Bonobo relocated once again, continuing his gradual move westward by laying down roots in Los Angeles. He had spent almost three years out on the road with no fixed home and on returning to New York, he found it a “noisy, stressful environment” and decided to try the other coast. All this – both the monumental live and DJ tours and his new home in a city full of people from somewhere else – has fed into what makes “Migration” such a special record. Drawing on both a new interest in found-sound and the “euphoric, spiritual moments” he experienced when playing his all-night DJ sets at his Output residency (where many of “Migrations” tracks were road tested) in New York and his Outlier events around the world, Green has placed the unstable, the heartbreaking, the often beautiful migratory life at the core of how he understands humanity, and hence how he understands music. Migration is to him, “The study of people and spaces,” he expands, “It’s interesting how one person will take an influence from one part of the world and move with that influence and effect another part of the world. Over time, the identities of places evolve.” It’s also true that the person will be changed. Green’s newest work is itself a statement of this change and growth.

Several hit singles, including the U.K. Top Five smash "Ready for Your Love," led up to the release of their highly successful debut full-length, 2014's Sirens. The duo kept busy over the next few years with constant DJ gigs and collaborations with stars such as Wyclef Jean and Chris Brown, and their heavily anticipated sophomore album, Escape, arrived in 2018. ~ AllMusic

Curtis Alan Jones has a laundry list of monikers he has gone by since his first appearance in the dance music scene in 1991. However, he is best known as Green Velvet and Cajmere. Inspired by the house music craze in the 80s, Jones picked himself up a keyboard, 4-track, and drum machine to try his hand at making music. It turned out he had a knack for it and in 1991, under Cajmere, he began releasing music. In 1992, he started his own label, Cajual Records, and released “Brighter Days”, a collaboration with superstar dance music singer, Dajae. The song hit number 2 on  the Billboard Dance Music Charts. Modern-day publications like Rolling Stone and MixMag have included the single on their lists detailing the best house tracks to date. In ‘95, under the name Green Velvet and on his new label Relief Records, Jones released another single “Flash” that too, skyrocketed to the top of the charts. He continued to produce bangers, putting out albums under the name Green Velvet.

  • IDA ENGBERG

27-year-old Ida Engberg started DJing hip hop and soul aged 14 after a boyfriend showed her how to mix, but she says “I had absolutely no plans on becoming a DJ, I just saw it as a new way to listen to and interact with music and I loved it!” But fate had other plans – while at a friend’s bar aged 18 his regular DJ called in sick. Ida talked her way onto the decks on the proviso that if it wasn’t working after half an hour she’d get off again – by the time she’d finished playing she’d secured her first weekly residence. “I was probably a terrible DJ” she says modestly, “but he loved the music so he booked me every Friday. At this time I was playing lounge music, ambient and soulful house.”,Ida honed her mixing skills and bagged her second residency through more fortuitous timing – working as a host at a big nightclub, Spy Bar, she stepped in for the errant resident DJ who’d had a skinful and promptly disappeared, leaving the dancefloor in silence. The owner immediately changed her job description to DJ, and put her in the main room, kicking off her DJ career proper. “I guess it was there it really started” says Ida. “I was playing house, tribal and electro and I really loved every second of it! I kept my residency there for two and a half years until I decided I wanted to spread my wings a bit.”,A move to Marbella brought 8 months of club gigs, followed by a season in Ibiza which inspired Ida musically like no other place. “I had fallen deeply in love with the minimal techno sound so it was perfect at the time. In Ibiza I met so many people who shared the same dream- To be working with music.” “I was playing in bars and smaller clubs and in afterhour parties. Everywhere I went it was people with the same passion for music as I had.” At the end of the season, Ida returned to Stockholm landing a top residency at Cocktail Club, the best underground club in Stockholm. “My first gig was a warm up for Eric Prydz and after that I did warm ups for everyone from Damian Lazarus, Mandy, Anja Schneider and Jennifer Cardini to Roger Sanchez and Steve Angello. “Stockholm is a great platform for electronic music. There are so many great producers and DJs living here and people really support each other.”,Although DJing is her first love, it was only a matter of time before Ida tried her hand at production. Her first effort was the massive Disco Volante – signed by John Dahlbäck to his Pickadoll label and released in 2007 with a Sebastien Leger remix it became a huge hit all over the world, featuring on compilations from Ministry of Sound, Defected in the House and Pacha Ibiza. It charted across the whole of Europe, doing especially well in Holland, Belgium and Germany. Two more tracks have followed on Get Physical and Pickadoll plus a remix for Dada Life, and Ida signed with the Plantage13 agency for international gigs. She can be found playing her brand of minimal, techno and tech house in clubs all over the world every weekend, and her love of what she does is obvious to all. Playing unplanned sets allows her to respond to the crowd, and she’s rocked parties and clubs like Miami’s Sunday School for Degenerates, Yes at Watergate in Berlin, Tomorrowland in Belgium, Melkweg in Amsterdam, Catwalk in Rotterdam and Op Art in Portugal to name a few. Lately she also took part in the Drumcode parties with Swedish companion Adam Beyer. “It’s still a musical journey, my style develops all the time and I’m always open to new impressions” says Ida. “That’s what makes it the best job in the world!”

  • Kevin Reynolds

Kevin Reynolds, producer / live performer from Detroit. Began in the local underground of the mid '90's Detroit Techno scene. Worked for Derrick May's label Transmat. His sound has been championed by Osunlade, Gilles Peterson, DJ Karizma, Jazzanova.. Born to two Irish-American Detroit autoworkers/civil rights activists, Kevin Reynolds' musical ear was trained by the soundtrack to the late night drives decidedly put on the car stereo by his parents: none other than the urbane and otherworldly voice of celebrated Detroit radio dj, Electrifyin' Mojo... While his mother attended medical school at Michigan State University, Kevin and his family lived in student housing that housed families from around the globe, with neighbors blaring insistent sounds of such diverse backgrounds as Afropop, music from China's urban centers, Tejano music, and spaced melodic sounds from the Middle East. Kevin was self taught when it came to making music with machines; obsessed with being able to create the music he was being exposed to on a daily basis, he approached and helped design the first Music Technology class in his high school... Reynolds' first foray into a professional music career was a call to work at Derrick May's seminal classic label Transmat Records. Initially signed on as an audio engineer fresh out of college in the dry deserts of Arizona, Derrick saw other plans for Reynolds and pushed him to develop knowledge in all aspects of music. While at Transmat, Reynolds was given the opportunity to manage all the audio production functions of the pioneering label. Working as an engineer and tour manager of Derrick May's Hi Tech Soul band Time: Space including Aril Brikha, John Beltran, Neil Olliverra, Tony Drake, Jeremy Ellis he travelled throughout North America, Europe and Japan. Among the many projects executed during his tenure at Transmat, he also curated the official music compilation for "Movement," Detroit's 2004 electronic music festival. Kevin’s music draws hints from a wide spectrum of artists. In his music you can hear the steely mechanics of Kraftwerk, the powerful blasts of John Coltrane, the emotive synths of Carl Craig, the social commentary of A Tribe Called Quest, the rawness of Jeff Mills, and lush waves of Sergio Mendes. On record, balance is key to his music: “You must have the light with the dark, day with night, and it’s a natural balance of opposites. " Since his initial steps at Transmat, Kevin also had the opportunity to be the US tour manager for Neo Soul artist Amp Fiddler. Founding his own label, Todhchai (which translates to "future, or things to come" in Gaelic), he has composed music for Lexus of America , Blue Cross Blue Shield, Red Bull and the Mayor of Detroit. This lead to the privilege of remixing The Detroit Symphony Orchestra's Stravinsky's riotous "Rite of Spring". In 2006, Reynolds released his first record "Afrik" to critical acclaim and championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson, Osunlade, Jazzanova, DJ Karizma and Masters At Work. The UK's BBC Radio One dubbed Reynolds the "new sound of Detroit Techno." His live performances have been showcased at Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2001 and 2004. Most recently his live sets where noted in Resident Advisor as highlight of the Movement 2009 Detroit Festival and called "fresh, evocative deep house tunes that never stopped evolving" by littlewhiteearbuds.com Most recently, Kevin composed an original song for Microsoft Ford Sync web launch called "playit4ward.msn.com

  • Kevin Saunderson

His influence runs deep, through both adopted hometown of Detroit, and music culture as a whole: as one of the Belleville Three, the high school trio which also includes Juan Atkins and Derrick May, he irreparably changed the face of electronic music; with Inner City, he gave it some of its most memorable tunes. Saunderson’s comparatively late start as a producer – kicking off in ’87 under the moniker of Kreem, with E-Dancer and Reese two of the more well-known names to follow – inadvertently gifted him a headstart. With the eruption of house music a few hours down the I-94 in Chicago, Saunderson married Detroit’s raw sound to more tactile, pop-leaning sensibilities. Inner City was born, and global success followed.

As far back as the early '90s, Ricardo Villalobos began building an impressive discography of 12" releases on respected dance labels like Playhouse and Perlon, and around the turn of the decade he was one of the most revered producers and DJs in dance music. In his youth, the Chilean-born Villalobos moved with his family to Germany in order to avoid the military dictatorship of Pinochet, and he eventually fell in with the country's fertile house community. A minimalist at heart, he trotted the globe to study percussion in order to apply his knowledge to his productions, which almost always sound remarkably expansive despite their simplicity. In addition to his own solo material, he has recorded with fellow expatriate Dandy Jack as Ric y Martin and with Luciano as Sense Club; additionally, he has taken part in Markus Nikolai's Hombre Ojo project. ~ AllMusic

  • Rimarkable

Redefining the word "remix", Detroit Native, Rimarkable is a renaissance woman indeed. A vocalist, lyricist, producer and DJ, she is a well respected force. Defying effortless categorization, Maria “Ri Ri'' Garcia aka Rimarkable is a child of funk, jazz, gospel, rock and soul, and her selections as a DJ and broadcaster fuse all of these sounds “wrapped into a house and techno box”. Growing up heavily influenced by Black gospel music, her mother a classically trained pianist and music minister in a Pentecostal church, Rimarkable’s childhood summers in Chicago also gave her an introduction to house music, during the genre’s explosive infancy. An Afro-Latina from Detroit, she’s first generation Puerto Rican, and the Afro-Caribbean sound continues to have a huge impact on her sonic leanings, alongside the unmistakable ear training of the city’s techno legacy. Rimarkable started professionally DJing in 1997, first doing private events and then clubs in the early 2000s. She’s since played around the world alongside the likes of George Clinton, Francois K, Bonobo and Gene Farris. She started producing in 2006, after she grew tired of male producers either not understanding how she wanted to sound, or luring her into the studio to hang out, then asking her to freestyle on the mic, while hitting ‘record’ and releasing music without her consent. Her first release as a producer was in 2011 on E-man's Liberate Recordings label, a track called "Peace Lives Here" ft. Valerie Troutt. A multi-hyphenate musician who has found various creative outlets over the years, Rimarkable believes in DJing and producing as a spiritual practice, exploring alchemy through the DJ art form as well as African spiritualism, healing, mental health and self-care. It’s a philosophy that eventually manifested as a lecture and classroom series called ‘The Alchemy of DJing’, a means for her to creatively engage in social justice, and empower women and youth. It’s taken her to various cities such as Nairobi and Berlin, and US institutions such as Yale and Queens Museum. Quite literally a party starter she also has produced dozens of successful events in New York, Detroit and the Bay Area over the past 20 years. In early 2021 Rimarkable signed to UK house music institution Defected including the Defected Music publishing arm, and stepped up as a presenter for the weekly Defected Radio show, which is syndicated globally to 170+ FM stations and available as a podcast with a reach of 20m+. Bringing her exceptionally rich music knowledge and unique flavor to the show, this house music alchemist’s next chapter looks set to be nothing short of remarkable.

Aside from the immediate success of “SCARY MONSTERS AND NICE SPRITES,” Skrillex has also made a name for himself as a highly sought-after remixer. He’s already produced officially commissioned remixes for such A-list artists as the Black Eyed Peas (“Rock That Body”), Lady Gaga (“Bad Romance” and “Alejandro”), and La Roux (“In For The Kill”). Skrillex stands not only at the vanguard of electronic dance music, but the perpetually evolving new music industry as a whole.

Special Request is the new rugged alias for house and techno stalwart Paul Woolford. Inspired by the unruly conventions of UK pirate radio stations, this project captures the raw energy and diversity of the illegal airwaves and uses this as a springboard of inspiration for a series of heavyweight productions that span from murky house through darkside techno to chaotic eye-of-the-storm hardcore/jungle tear-outs. The end results are incendiary.

A veteran DJ with more than ten years of experience under his belt; Detroit native, T.Linder has done his homework and paid his dues. T.Linder takes a no-nonsense, working-class approach to the art of spinning records. He cites old-school Detroit street jocks: The Wizard (aka. Jeff Mills), Gary Chandler, and Steve "DJ Energy" Crawford among others, as major inspirations for his unorthodox aesthetic. "If someone's going to pay money to hear me spin, I'm going to make it worth their money. The way I look at it, there's too many DJs out there meticulously and methodically blending records that all sound the same. As a listener, I'm easily bored with that. I like to take some risks when I perform, skipping across genres and eras, doing scratch tricks with two copies of the same record. I want to give the listener the experience of hearing something they haven't heard before." Over the past decade, T.Linder has kept a busy performance schedule that has taken him to literally thousands of events across North America. He has played at most, if not all, of the venues in Detroit catering to Electronic Music. Notably, 2030 Grand River, The Works, Motor Lounge, St.Andrew's Hall, and the Underground Stage at the 2002 Detroit Electronic Music Festival (a gig that he considers one of his career highlights). In 2007, T.Linder released his first EP entitled DTM002 , on Detroit Techno Militia (a record label/artist collective that he co-founded). He has also done remix projects for legendary Detroit Techno producers K.Hand, and Scan 7. In the future he plans to continue doing what he has does best, creating and playing timeless records, and asserting his position within the rich history of Detroit Techno. "A lot of DJs are switching over digital technology as a medium for their performances. I've been very reluctant to take that step. I am a vinyl DJ first and foremost, so I'll probably play records until my favorite labels stop pressing them. Mainly because I find them more reliable. I've never had a record crate crash in the middle of one of my shows and kill all of the music. Additionally, I think there's something to be said for the tradition of DJs playing old fashioned wax with analog turntables. Music from the future, made and performed with equipment from the past!"

  • WILKINSON

Hailing from the leafy suburbs of South West London is Ram Recordsʼ new signing Wilkinson. His first insight into making music came at the age of 9 when his parents bought him a drum kit. Mark ʻWilkinsonʼ joined a few bands and was playing at venues as far as the Birmingham NEC and as close as the local old peoples home. This swiftly ended at the age of 14 when Wilkinson discovered his passion for dance music amongst other things. A few years and part time jobs later, after driving his family mad with large amounts of bass loosening the brickwork of his house, Mark secured himself a studio not far from his home.,After fine-tuning his production skills, Wilkinson passed a few songs on to Hospital Records via Cyantific, which led to his first release on Hospital Recordsʼ Sick Music 2 compilation. A few months later Wilkinson sent a folder of tunes to Ram Records and within days received a phone call from Andy C inviting him for a meeting at the Ram Records HQ.,October 2010 saw three of Wilkinsonʼs songs featured on Andy Cʼs Nightlife 5 album and releases including ʻMoonwalkerʼ/ʻSamuraiʼ, ʻRefugeʼ, ʻGet Into Itʼ and the mighty ʻEverytimeʼ/ʻOverdoseʼ doing damage across dance-floors worldwide, winning fans from Skream, Fabio and High Contrast in the process.,Since then Mark has remixed Chase & Status top 5 single ʻTimeʼ, Time Takers ʻShe Blowsʼ and Exampleʼs new single ʻMidnight Runʼ to much critical acclaim. Heʼs also currently working on production projects for new Mercury Records signing JayʼElleʼDee and Island Records artist Jess Mills.,Now hotly tipped to do big things across drum & bass and electronica, Wilkinson is also busy working on his debut album for Ram Records and continues to tour worldwide from Sydney to Berlin, Barcelona to Brighton with his dynamic and energetic DJ sets.,One to watch for 2012.

  • DA TWEEKAZ

Da Tweekaz, also known as Kenth Kvien and Marcus Nordli, had been making music together for a couple of years before they got into hardstyle. They tried making different styles of harder dance music such as: hardtrance, hardhouse and hardtechno , but it wasn’t until fall 2007 that these 2 guys started their career as hardstyle producers.,Da Tweekaz got their passion fueled when their songs started to end up on different forums, MP3 sites etc. Normally this would be a bad thing for a producer, but for two upcoming producers this is what they needed; people talking about them. As a result of this they started to spend more time on tracks and one day they got contacted by DJ’s United Records. From now on they were not bedroom producers anymore, but professional producers doing what they do best, making music.,After massive releases such as Angeli Domini, Da Bomba Whatevah, Get Mad and with the help of some unofficial remixes, they had found a sound of their own. Their passion for the 8bit sound is also recognized in several of their tracks.,In 2009 they started to be well recognized DJs as well. Their first official gig was for the newly started hard dance party organizer “Hardstyle DNA”. While enjoying their residency and spending more and more time in the studio; their fan base was rapidly expanding. As a result of this, organizers from other countries started to notice the duo Da Tweekaz, and this led to gigs in UK and the Netherlands. Their DJ sets are a treat too. Da Tweekaz are not only combining their DJ skills but also their personalities, so be sure to enjoy a full DJ set complemented with humor while dancing to their beats.,In 2010 Da Tweekaz rapidly expanded across the borders. Their big dream of international fame became true when Dirty Workz approached them to join their family of producers. Their first releases under the Dirty Workz label; DNA, Be Aware, Whatevah 2010 and Hook My Mic Up where a big hit on the charts, and so was their official remix of Brennan Hearts Revival X; which they won in a remix contest made by Brennan Heart himself. Now they are in-demand producers with the agenda booked for Bassleader, Q-Base, Qontinent and gigs in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, UK and the Netherlands.,One thing is certain, by the end of 2011 Da Tweekaz will have accomplished more than they could ever dream of, and this is not the last you will hear from these two funny upcoming Norwegians.

Diana studied social communication, but the call from the DJ booth supplanted that of the secretary of any newsroom and Diana found herself writing her own future through more sinuous lines of electrically constructed grooves, with Detroit memory and future in space. She joined the RDZ collective, spreading underground waves among lovers of this culture that makes pulsating 4 by 4 away of punctuating life. The experience gained was then applied to leading clubs and festivals that accommodate this type of vision, with growing applause translating a solid rise within the national dance music landscape.

Robert Etheridge aka Dimension is one of the UK’s most unique electronic music artists. Defined by a clear aesthetic that bleeds through into his music and imagery, Dimension has announced himself as one of the new wave of dance music headliners. Dimension’s combination of seemingly effortless musicality and production prowess first caught the attention of tastemakers and DJs such as Chase & Status, Annie Mac (5x Hottest Records), Skrillex (who remixed the much-lauded ‘UK’), and deadmau5. Over the past few years, he’s built a discography balanced between airwave conquering vocals and underground club anthems; and what was once one of UK dance music’s best kept secret now has a rapidly growing global profile. After a remarkable rise since his debut single, Dimension announced himself on the global stage with ‘Desire’, his collaboration with Sub Focus. The record’s list of achievements is near endless; it spent 9 weeks on Radio 1’s playlist (5 on the A-list), has amassed over 50 million global streams to date and has been certified a silver single in the UK by BPI (200,000 sales). Following ‘Desire’ came Dimension’s next string of solo releases, ‘Devotion’ featuring Cameron Hayes, ‘If You Want To’ and ‘Love To Give’ which all rapidly picked up midweek Annie Mac support alongside BBC Radio 1 plays from Phil Taggart’s Hype Chart, Mistajam and Rene LaVice; and together, hitting over 20 million global streams to date.

  • EELKE KLEIJN

Eelke’s life has always been intrigued by modern technology. Being fascinated by everything related to science fiction and technological developments, his interests are anything but your usual cup of tea. He is currently getting a degree in biological psychology at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. At home, his TV is tuned into Discovery Channel frequently. A real “Trekkie” perhaps as well, as he is a big fan of Star Trek. It is no surprise that Eelke enjoys watching the sky, not just on a warm summer day, but preferably at night, when he can aim his telescope at the stars and planets. It is not as severe as it sounds though, as he loves spending his free time playing video games and watching South Park. His biggest passion however is, without a doubt, music.,The world of music today is closely related to technology, something Eelke discovered at a young age. Therefore it is not strange at all that he got involved in it. “I could have easily ended up with an ICT related job”, he adds. Over the years Eelke has built and repaired a fair share of computers and also designed a variety of websites, including his own. At age 14, he got his first job working as a website designer for a music store. It gave him the opportunity to explore the studio equipment they sold in much detail, bringing home every piece of hardware he could get his hands on during the weekends.,In 2003 Eelke released his first single “4.5 Billion Years”, interestingly named after our planet’s currently estimated age, on Segment Records. This very limited 12 inch drew the attention of John Digweed and Seb Fontaine and is still held in high regard up to this day. It opened the door to labels such as Lost Language and Plastik Park. It was not until early 2006 however, that Eelke would indefinitely make an impact on the dance scene. Many months spent in the studio resulted in a series of releases, the most noticeable probably being “8 Bit Era / Import Bride” on Baroque Records which was very well received and got included on Nick Warren’s “Global Underground 030: Paris” compilation. “8 Bit Era” also received solid airtime on Dutch National radio. Ever since, many labels have taken notice of the sympathetic Dutchman, resulting in remixes for the likes of Jeff Bennett, Madoka and Snake Sedrick. In early 2007 his remix for Kosmas Epsilon’s “Paranoid” was picked up by Hernan Cattaneo for his Renaissance compilation "Sequential 2’.,It is difficult to describe Eelke’s sound in a few words though. “I am easily bored with music, I don’t like recycling sounds and ideas all the time”, he explains. His almost trancy cooperations with fellow Dutchman C-Jay indeed are very different from the dark and twisted grooves he has produced with Nick Hogendoorn and again different from the ambient and chilled-out songs he has written himself. “As with my DJ sets, I need variety in order to remain interested in what I’m doing. Producing different styles is almost like a way to express the different moods I’m in”. The recent signing of “Walkabout” on Ork Recordings with Nick is a perfect example, receiving critical acclaim from artists as diverse as Fish Go Deep, Nic Fanciulli and Anthony Pappa. Outside the Box Music, Eelke’s label launched in 2006 and part of the Groovecollection Music Management, reflects his taste in music like nothing else, with releases varying from techno-edged minimal to funky progressive house.,Spring 2007 saw Eelke taking the next leap towards fulfilling his dreams. Months of labour finally paid off when his debut artist album ‘Naturally Artificial’ was snapped up by Global Underground. It did not take the guys at GU long to see its potential. “Needless to say I am extremely happy about it!”, he adds. “Global Underground is one of the labels that have been around since the beginning, you don’t get a chance like this every day”.,So what else is there for Eelke you ask? We almost forgot to mention he is an excellent DJ as well, having played gigs in many European countries as well as Lebanon and Jordan. His monthly 2-hour radio show “Outside the Box”, broadcasted on Frisky Radio and Proton Radio, gives him the opportunity to showcase his sound worldwide. “What I love about Outside the Box is that I can do whatever I want”, he says. “It is almost like trying to educate people with different sounds, I can play deeper than at an average club night”.,Meanwhile Eelke has continued his work in the studio, a variety of news tracks and remixes are due throughout 2007. Success doesn’t come overnight, something we all know and this has also been the case with Eelke. Rest assured, though, that this is probably not the last we will hear from Mr. Kleijn.,Last Edited: June 2007,Biography additions made by: Peter van Hal (Deep Records / Deep Focus)

  • HEADHUNTERZ

Willem Rebergen, better known as Headhunterz, kicked off his DJ career in 2003. That year, a friend gave him a ticket to Qlimax, and it was love at first sight. Discovering hardstyle music and its dedicated scene changed his life. From that moment on, he committed himself to becoming the best producer in the hardstyle genre. He locked himself up in his tiny bedroom studio, in the attic of his parents’ house in Veenendaal, and quickly learned the ropes of producing. Unaware of the revolution he would start, the foundations of the Headhunterz sound were made. Headhunterz’ new take on Hardstyle music made the genre grow into an international phenomenon. It was no longer just the sound of European raves, but became something worldly. Headhunterz made new audiences fall in love with the unstoppable energy of Hardstyle music. 7 years after visiting his very first hardstyle party he was on top of his career, with each new track captivating both his fanbase and artists outside the scene.

As one of Europe’s most wanted underground weapons, Héctor Oaks style stands out for playing the unexpected and the highly engaging. As DJ, producer and label head his take on techno resonates by combining the contemporary with hand-picked tracks from the history of rave culture. Héctor Oaks has been behind the turntables for almost half of his life. Gaining his first credits in Madrid's underground, it was when he relocated to Berlin, that his DJing really took off. Not long after his move to the German capital, the trained sound engineer released his first vinyl releases on KEY VINYL. This kick-start into the fertile soils of Berlin’s underground lay the foundation of a career, that has taken off internationally in the past years. It’s the dancefloors that taught this DJ his outstanding empathy and intuition for the sounds, that make a crowd vibrate. Constant practice and the dedication to music shaped his style. Known for his stamina and mixing skills, it is his selection that truly stands out. What seems eclectic on the first sight, is a well-curated mix of vinyl gems. Héctor Oaks seeks for the sweet spot between tracks that are connected not by genre but vibe and style. As vinyl-only DJ, his selection thrives on Oaks’ passion for digging in record shops all around the world. Not to mention the years in Berlin ́s infamous Record Loft, that served the local scene with an outstandingly broad selection of 2nd hand vinyl. When in the mood for a proper rave, you will find Oaks playing under his alias Cadency. The moniker is home to the more explorative side of genres: breaks, ghetto, oomphy grooves and a pinch of funk. As Oaks’s calls it: techno body music gone pop. Cadency’s appearances are rare, so catch them while they’re hot.

̸BIOGRAPHY Jaguar is a broadcaster and DJ representing the next wave of emerging talent on her BBC Radio 1 show, Introducing Dance. Jaguar Bingham is every bit as memorable as her name. Hailing from Alderney in the Channel Islands, but based in East London, the 27-year-old broadcaster, DJ and journalist, known mononymously as Jaguar, is among the new guard of multi-hyphenate talents steering UK dance music towards brighter waters. She’s a next-gen tastemaker instigating change through projects such as UTOPIA and The Jaguar Foundation. Jaguar’s work to date, spanning from her radio internship at BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra in 2014 to more recent endeavours such as her landmark BBC Introducing on Radio 1 Dance show, has been anchored by a desire to spotlight new artists and minority voices within electronic music. It’s what drew her to BBC Introducing – a platform devoted to unsigned and emerging musicians – in the first place. In 2016, Jaguar joined the crew as Team Assistant at the station’s Sheffield HQ. At the time, she was studying English Literature at Leeds University. (A move, says Jaguar, spurred on by the city’s reputation for vibrant nightlife.) Each week, she would rifle through tunes submitted to the BBC Uploader by new artists. “I was listening to all the dance tracks and sending them to Danny and Monki, and Annie's shows and Pete's shows,” says Jaguar, who later worked for BBC Introducing’s Central Team in London, “so I was ready, even then, for my own show.” That moment came in 2020, when Jaguar launched the BBC Introducing Dance show on Radio 1. A defining moment in Jaguar’s career to date, the show has been met with critical acclaim. In 2021, Mixmag named her Broadcaster of the Year – a poignant accolade, given it was there that Jaguar’s voice and face became synonymous with its weekly office party, the LAB LDN. “I fell in love with dance music at the LAB LDN,” says Jaguar on her time at Mixmag, where she also worked as Weekend Editor for a time. “It was really special.” Elsewhere, she was awarded Best Radio Show for BBC Introducing Dance through a public vote at last year’s DJ Mag Best of British Awards. The magazine had previously dubbed her “UK radio’s next gen champion”. More recently, Jaguar was tapped to co-present this year’s IMS alongside summit co-founder Pete Tong MBE. Keen to diversify her work, Jaguar has also produced and voiced documentaries for radio on topics such as LGBTQIA+ safe space clubbing and written articles spotlighting unsung Black women pioneers in house music. She was also Beatportal’s Guest Editor in August 2021, and previously helmed a show on South London community station Reprezent Radio, which she dedicated to new music and guests such as HAAi, Anja Schneider and Dance System. In September 2020, Jaguar turned her attention to parties. She launched an event, UTOPIA, with the brand later branching out into a UTOPIA Talks conference and podcast. The latter welcomed SHERELLE, Mary-Anne Hobbs, Sama’ and many more in its first season. “I describe UTOPIA as my vision of the world,” says Jaguar, reflecting on the brand at large and the very first UTOPIA club night: a sold-out celebration at London’s Night Tales. “It’s a world I'm trying to get to through all of the work I do: radio, DJing and so on. It's a community.” Speaking of communities, Jaguar was inspired by some of the queer parties and venues she’d encountered previously as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Dalston Superstore, say, or Leeds’ Wharf Chambers. Elsewhere, she’s thrilled to be sharing her latest project, The Jaguar Foundation, with the world. A partnership with Ministry of Sound and Sony Music UK Social Justice Fund, Jaguar described the foundation as a “home for my long-term commitment to [equalising] music through more forward-thinking initiatives and partnerships” in an op-ed she penned for the Independent. The Jaguar Foundation released its first report on the state of gender equality in UK dance music at last month’s IMS. Furthermore, the foundation’s first initiative, Future1000, saw Jaguar collaborating with in-school music education platform Virtuoso (fka FutureDJs) on a free, UK-wide DJ, production and leadership programme which introduced 1000 female, trans and non-binary students aged 12-18 to the music industry. A major move for the industry and Jaguar alike. Tackling issues such as gender imbalance, representation and accessibility within the industry at a foundational level, the initiative provided curious minds with artist-led sessions with the likes of Jyoty, Jayda G and Bklava and course modules curated by the London College of Music Education. “I wanted the students to feel represented, supported, and comfortable,” explains Jaguar. “It can be scary learning to DJ. I wanted them to feel they were in an environment where they feel safe to explore their interests.” Future1000 was brought to life during the pandemic. It was then that Jaguar, amid the chaos of the time, recognised what her purpose was – and had been for some time, subconsciously – within the industry: amplifying marginalised and undiscovered artists and DJs. “It made me look inward,” says Jaguar on lockdown. “I realised I’m never going to be the loudest person. My way of expressing myself comes through my work and making it clear that I’m going to spotlight not just great music, but great music from women, and Black, brown, trans and non-binary people.” Born to a Ghanaian mother and English father, Jaguar cites the “lineage of Ghanaian women” on her mother’s side, along with her girlfriend, as continued inspirations. Though it was her father who taught her to always go the extra mile and dream big. (She reckons she’s also inherited his work ethic.) She looks up to fellow tastemakers such as Annie Mac and The Blessed Madonna, as well as Clara Amfo and Honey Dijon. This admiration is entirely reciprocated. Jaguar is a regular at the Annie Mac-curated Lost and Found Festival in Malta, for instance, where she treats sun-kissed ravers to her signature cocktail of genre-hopping, feel-good bubblers. She has previously supported Annie at venues across the UK, including Warehouse Project and the Pickle Factory. In 2018, Jaguar was mentored by The Blessed Madonna for the Smirnoff Equalising Music campaign. It was a spectacular ‘pinch-me’ moment that solidified her incredible career trajectory up until then. Let’s rewind though, for a second. Growing up on Alderney, it was the video games that initially piqued Jaguar’s interest in immersive electronic music and world-building through sound design. “I’d play Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts,” she recalls. “I loved fantasy games, they’ve got such incredible soundtracks. I’ve actually started gaming again, since lockdown. Seven-year-old me would be excited to see it.” Her older brother exposed her to much of the music that eventually shaped her personal taste. (Her brother’s collection, that is, along with teenage summers spent raving in WWII bunkers on the island). Back when they were kids, he would transfer tunes from his Limewire-acquired collection to her iPod. “I'd listen to Kanye West and the Chemical Brothers,” she says with a grin so infectious you can’t help but smile too. “I remember hearing Timbaland's Shock Value for the first time, as well as Gorillaz's Demon Days.” A love for pop music soon blossomed, with Beyoncé, Black-Eyed Peas and emo/pop-punk outfit Evanescence, along with Aussie sisterly duo the Veronicas, among her favourites back then. Her affinity for electronic music and genres such as house, techno and disco, along with jungle, drum’n’bass and stacks more floor-filling styles, merged with an interest in student radio while in Leeds. “I loved the way talking about music, discovering music and presenting it to an audience made me feel,” she says of the days spent presenting and producing her own student radio show, Dangerous Jag. In 2016, Jaguar won two coveted Studio Radio Awards. “It was like winning an Oscar at the time!” she laughs. Since her first stint on the airwaves, it’s been clear Jaguar possesses a natural talent for bonding with listeners via a shared love for great music. Not only that, but a determination to uplift those around her. See, Jaguar isn’t content with making a name for herself alone. Instead, she strives to rise through the ranks side by side with her peers. Take her recent run of headline UK shows with UTOPIA, which saw her inviting Future1000 alumni Badly Drawn Banana aboard the HMS UTOPIA for an intimate party on the Thames. Looking ahead, Jaguar is a resident at iconic hotspot Pikes Ibiza this season, with shows also confirmed at storied venues such as DC10 and Amnesia. Elsewhere, she’ll set out on a must-see European tour of her own, hitting up events such as Glastonbury, Circoloco and Radio 1’s Big Weekend this spring and summer. Jaguar will also fly UTOPIA out to Ibiza for a pair of unmissable White Isle shows, and make her US debut this October at CRSSD Festival. She’s also ideating on future film and documentary projects. She’d like to write some books down the line, and live out her childhood dreams by dabbling in TV presenting. She also plans to grow UTOPIA into a festival one day and aspires to host the BBC’s coverage of Glastonbury. We can expect future club sets to include specially-produced edits of tracks made by Jaguar’s friends, too. A neat touch, one that’s very much in keeping with the spirit of togetherness that permeates through all that Jaguar does. Togetherness, authenticity and the delightful purveyance of effervescent dance music: these are the calling cards of Jaguar.

Ever since he could remember, Jon Dixon has had a passion for music. Jon began playing by ear at the age of four and has always enjoyed challenging himself by learning music in this manner. As time went on, word of mouth began to spread about Dixon and his talents. While in college he accompanied The Mosaic Youth Theater of Detroit as an accompanist/bandleader for their productions and concerts as well as performed all over the city and state. Jon currently teaches multiple group piano classes at the Michigan State University Community Music School in Midtown Detroit. Joris Voorn sits at the epicenter of the Dutch electronic music scene, the most renowned and instantly recognisable artist from Holland, representing underground house and techno on a wider global stage. For a country with a population of just seventeen million Holland’s contribution to world electronic music is unsurpassed. While house and techno trace their roots to the marginal and mainly black American underground, its taken a relatively small country in the European lowlands to flip electronic music on its head and turn it into the global powerhouse it is today. In 2016 few could deny that Amsterdam is the global capital of electronic music and few artists embody the melting pot of musical influences that define the city’s underground techno scene more than Joris Voorn. ~ Resident Advisor

  • KASKADE

“Kaskades signature sound is as unmistakable as it is beautiful; a combination of dewy female vocals, tough electronic underpinnings, and memorable melodies.” — Billboard,The New York Times may have called him the “new face of electronic dance music” in a recent profile, but Ryan Raddon, known as Kaskade, has been in the trenches of the EDM scene as an original recording artist and in-demand DJ for more than a decade. He has released seven studio albums, including his latest, Fire & Ice, scored nine Top 10 hits on Billboard’s Hot Dance Airplay Chart, created chart-topping remixes for everyone from Lady Gaga to Beyoncé, appeared at all the major summer festivals, and has performed between 150 and 200 headlining shows a year for the last 10 years, building a name for himself as an innovator of the EDM scene as we know it today, which has opened doors for the likes of Deadmau5, Tiesto, Skrillex and more. In doing so, he has helped to lay the groundwork for a titanic musical and cultural shift: a post-rock EDM revolution that has captured the imagination of a new generation of music lovers across North America,Kaskade has been named America’s No. 1 DJ by DJ Times and Pioneer DJ. In 2012, he will appear at this year’s Coachella, for which he has a special performance planned, and will hit the road in May for his biggest headlining tour ever — 50-plus North American shows in just over three months. His own live show is a jaw-dropping spectacle that finds him performing in front of an 80-foot wide, three-stories tall LED screen that blares images synched with the music while strobe Lights scan the crowd. Kaskade’s belief in the transformative power of dance music to uplift thousands of people at once has had a significant effect on the U.S. scene. His ground-breaking double residency in Las Vegas at the Encore Beach Club (which had not even been built when he signed on) and Marquee has elevated the city’s status as a premiere club-going destination on par with London, Berlin, and Ibiza, is another testament to his influence.,Growing up in the Chicago suburbs, Raddon was heavily influenced by New Wave bands like The Cure, Echo and The Bunnymen, and The Smiths that ignited his love for melody and lyrics and was strongly impacted by the house music scene that developed in Chicago. Following stints spinning throughout college and in A&R at OM Records, he began working on his own music, which includes multiple singles, EPs, and remixes, as well as the albums: his most recent 2011 release Fire & Ice – which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Dance Chart, No. 3 on the Independent Albums chart, and No. 17 on the Top 200 Albums chart, while the iTunes version debuted at No. 4 on the overall album chart. The Fire disc contains ten original songs geared firmly toward the dancefloor, while on the Ice disc, Kaskade delivers the perfect down-tempo post-club experience by remixing all ten songs. Both discs showcase the musical versatility tat has characterized his work ever since he began writing his own songs. This album was preceded by It’s You, It’s Me (2003), In the Moment (2004), The Calm (2006), Here & Now (2006), Love Mysterious (2006), Strobelite Seduction (2008), Dynasty (2010) and Dance.Love (2010).

Since forming in 2012, Leftwing & Kody have gone on to become two of the UK’s finest exports. Both Mixmag and DJ Mag named them as ones to watch a mere year after they paired up, with DJ Mag even nominating them for ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’ in their Best of British Awards. Since then the duo has gone on to present a monthly Rinse FM show, earn residencies at Fabric (London) and Sankeys (Ibiza), as well as releases on Hot Creations, VIVa, Truesoul, Mobilee and Knee Deep In Sound, as well as their own renowned imprint Lost Records. It’s fair to say Leftwing & Kody, real names Jon Kong and Chris Adie, have made it look easy, but it’s their determination and diligence that’s helped them prosper so rapidly in such a short time. Before long support from the upper echelons of house and techno quickly burgeoned, with Carl Cox, Jamie Jones, James Zabiela, Maya Jane Coles, Loco Dice, Steve Lawler, Adam Beyer, Nic Fanciulli and Huxley continually advocating their productions throughout the years.

  • Mall Grab

Jordan Alexander (aka Mall Grab) is an Australian house producer whose specialization in lo-fi tracks doesn't stop him from encompassing a variety of genre influences. Emerging in 2015, Alexander took his moniker from the sarcastic term used when someone holds a skateboard incorrectly -- with the grip tape rubbing against their clothes -- which is typical of people who use one as an accessory; the name hints at the fun-loving nature behind his productions and his often-cheeky demeanor. Sun RaBorn in Newcastle, Australia, Alexander was originally inspired by his parents' rock & roll record collection, but when he hit his teens he developed a love of electronic and dance music, specifically electro and the rise of the Ed Banger crew. As his taste matured, Alexander found an affinity with dusty, understated house cuts, leading to his debut EP, 2015's Feel U, which saw release on Canadian label Collect-Call; despite being the label's first unknown signing, the EP quickly sold out. ~ AllMusic

Over the last ten years, Mark Farina has built himself up to become one of the most sought-after DJs in dance music today. Though he is mostly recognized for his deep-house DJ prowess, it is Farina’ wide-ranging musical knowledge that helped shape the Mushroom Jazz series, a continuously mixed collection of down-tempo, dance-floor jazz for the turntablist generation. A mix-tape made over eight years ago was the project’ original seed – a similarly-styled tape of jazz tunes that articulated a mellower counterpart to the up-tempo “Acid Jazz” movement of the day.,Farina’ “Mushroom Jazz” sound subsequently became popular through a long-running San Francisco club called Jazid Up, then through various Mushroom Jazz clubs thrown domestically and abroad.,Farina began his DJing career at the age of 15, inspired by the strong house and dance music scene pulsating in Chicago’ underground. Along with long time friend and DJ partner, Derrick Carter, Farina cut his teeth on the college radio airwaves of Northwestern University’ WNUR every Friday night for 2 years. Farina has released one album, Mood.,(Nettwerk UK Records, under the name Symbols and Instruments), and several other mix projects including Seasons (Domestic Records), United DJs of America (DMC) and Imperial Dub’ compilation (Imperial Dub) in addition to the Mushroom Jazz series and his mix on OM Records’ “San Francisco Sessions’” debut.

Having secured releases on some of the biggest labels in the scene, gained DJ support from the likes of Friction, Hype, Fabio and London Elektricity, the young Belgian from Edegem near Antwerp earned a nomination as “Best Upcoming Producer” at the Drum + Bass Arena Awards in 2008 and fulfilled this ambition two years on with is “Best Newcomer Producer” award in 2010.,Leading a wave of new skool D+B talent from Europe with his blend of uplifting, melancholic melodies and heavy dancefloor bass + beats, Netsky’s popularity as both a DJ and producer is second to none.,He first came to Hospital’s attention with ‘Smile’ and was quickly snapped up, signing exclusively to Hospital in late 2009. Netsky’s first release on Hospital was the iconic ‘Memory Lane’ (featured on Sick Music 2 in 2010) and this was swiftly followed up by his chart topping debut album – ‘Netsky’ – in May of the same year. Following virtually unanimous praise and hype from all corners of the globe, it plunged Netsky firmly into the limelight, where he has remained ever since, delivering a potent mix of dancefloor anthems, vocal led classics and clean cut new jungle sound which has become his trademark.,Since then, Netsky’s profile as a remixer has been affirmed by his huge remixes of ubiquitous anthems such as Pendulum – ‘Witchcraft’, Plan B, Leftfield – ‘Release The Pressure’, Audio Bullies – ‘Only Man’ and Swedish House Mafia – ‘One’.,Alongside this, is Netsky’s hectic DJ schedule which regularly takes him across Europe, the UK and around the world. His skills behind the decks are enviable and he seems to have a Midas touch; able to transform even the most subdued of arties into an ecstatic, bouncing rave within a matter of minutes and it is no coincidence that he was nominated for the Radio One ‘Essential Mix Of The Year’ last year. With more big plans lined up and work towards a new album underway, 2011 will is looking to be another golden year for Belgium’s premium D+B export.

  • PAUL KALKBRENNER

Even though reality shows have been trying to prove otherwise, a successful career as a musician, even as a pop star, cannot be forced with a pre-packaged crash course. As of 2010, Paul Kalkbrenner has tallied up more than 15 years of experience as a producer and live act, all the while learning what it means to go purposefully from one step to the next. When the Berlin Wall fell, he was 12. The soundtrack of his youth, and of the majority of his generation, was still in its infancy, awaiting its breakthrough: techno music.,The fall of the wall meant reunification, but above all, a sense of no holds barred. The eastern part of the city became the anarchic, creative playground for a euphoric youth, now freed from bureaucracy. The early 90s were formative years for a young Paul Kalkbrenner as well. Eventually, in one of many long and sleepless nights on the dancefloors of E-Werk, Planet and Whale, the dream was born to make music himself, and anything less important would be put aside. A job as TV editor got him through the mid-90s and financed his first music gear. By this point Paul had already decided that he did not want to be a typical DJ playing other people’s records, but rather to play only his own music, live in a club setting. His first tracks were released in 1999 on Berlin-based BPitch Control (the newly founded label from Ellen Allien) as the Friedrichshain EP, titled after his home district in the city’s east. A series of further singles and two full-lengths (Superimpose and Time) followed, plus continuous live performances that threatened to shatter the grid of his calendar.,Together with Paul Kalkbrenner, BPitch Control gained a strong momentum. Interviews in respected German magazines like Spex and De:Bug paved the way for regular international bookings. The Lufthansa fetishist had now become a frequent flyer. Paul’s third album Self (2004) would mark the beginning of a new era. His melodic sound, with its affinity for grand emotional gestures, obeyed the logic of the dancefloor, but Self introduced a narrative aesthetic, serving as a soundtrack to a film that didn’t exist (at least, not yet…). It was Paul’s most musical and mature album to date, although still taking cues from the dancefloor and rave culture, offering a first glimpse of what was yet to come. "Gebrünn Gebrünn”, released one year later, became a crossover hit found in every DJ’s record bag and finally cemented Paul’s status as a Techno MVP.,In early 2006, German director Hannes Stöhr, an avid fan of Self, decided to get in contact with Kalkbrenner. His idea was to produce a film about a musician in Techno City during the new millennium, and Paul would compose the soundtrack. The two met, traded ideas and experiences, and soon after began working on the screenplay’s first draft. In the course of their exchange, Hannes had the realization that Paul should not just contribute the music, but that he would be the perfect choice as the film’s star. Without hesitation, Paul accepted the offer. They decided to title the film Berlin Calling. For the soundtrack’s production, Paul and his friend (and BPitch colleague) Sascha Funke spent half a year in Cézanne’s hometown of Aix-En-Provence in southern France.,Unencumbered by the cold, gray Berlin winter, Paul devoted himself entirely to the musical aspect of the project. One song already had a title: “Sky and Sand” with vocals by Paul’s brother Fritz. Upon Paul’s return to Berlin in 2007, the filming began, and the finished work was brought to German theaters in October 2008. Berlin Calling and Paul’s debut acting performance received positive reviews, and the film, thanks to its authentic depiction of the Berlin club scene and drug culture, became, slowly but surely, a cult classic.,The soundtrack and especially the single “Sky and Sand” broke all sales records. That track in particular went gold in Belgium where it remained in the charts’ Top Ten for weeks. The 2009 DVD release of the film brought Paul to a new, much larger audience around the world. By the end of the year, Paul separated with BPitch Control after a decade-long relationship to take the next steps of his career alone. In early 2010 Paul completed a twelve-city live concert tour throughout Europe (with over 50,000 tickets sold within just a few weeks), followed by many headlining appearances at summer festivals. More tours and new challenges await him.

  • Richie Hawtin

Richie Hawtin played an essential role in developing the sound of minimal techno, as well as spreading its popularity throughout the global club scene. Most famous for his experimental acid techno productions as Plastikman, including the classic albums Musik (1994) and Consumed (1998), he is equally well-regarded for his groundbreaking live sets and mix CDs (especially 1999's Decks, EFX & 909) which utilize cutting-edge DJ technology, fusing loops of techno records with additional synthesizers and drum machines. Initially based in Windsor, Ontario and connected with the techno scene in nearby Detroit, he co-founded the highly influential Plus 8 (and its harder sublabel Probe Records) along with John Acquaviva, later establishing Minus and relocating to Berlin during the early 2000s, just as minimal techno began receiving mainstream exposure. Hawtin has continued pushing the limits of technology, developing highly conceptual events which are often intertwined with the art world. ~ AllMusic

  • SCOOTER

Of course, the band’s route to success was not quite as simple as frontman H.P. Baxxter describes. Scooter have indeed worked hard on their career and – we should not forget – they have now been in the business for over ten years. The former techno trio, who fought their way through the discotheques with “Hyper Hyper”, has developed into a serious band that now fills arenas with 80,000 people, has sold over ten million records and whose list of gold and platinum discs just seems to be endless.,Did anyone expect this back in 1994 when the band was formed in its original line-up? H.P. Baxxter, Rick J. Jordan, Ferris Bueller and, not least, manager and label boss Jens Thele started small: The trio’s debut “Hyper Hyper” went straight into the charts – and was immediately passed off as a one-hit wonder. However, the critics and journalists spoke far too soon. The follow-up hits like “Move Your Ass”, “Friends”, “Endless Summer”and “Back In The UK” were all just as successful. Anyone who believed that Scooter just wanted ride on the wave of their first hit were very wrong. Fun was and is the driving force behind the trio, by far more than the pressure to succeed and live up to expectations.,This explains the phenomenon of Scooter seeming to re-invent themselves for almost every single. Constantly combining styles that others would strictly separate, H.P., Rick and Ferris employ their unbelievable creativity with a healthy portion of humour and irony. The result is electronic ballads, eighties-style electro tracks, melancholic songs like “No Fate” or “She’s The Sun” and the legendary techno rock monster “Fire” (1997), which still sends H.P.’s “Flying V” guitar up in flames each night on stage. New member Axel Coon also felt this when he replaced Ferris Bueller in 1997, as did his successor Jay Frog, who is still a permanent member of the trio today.,All band members have their own special roles: H.P. still writes all of the lyrics while Rick and Jay are busy with the playbacks in the studio. To keep Scooter’s hand in club scene, Jay has taken over the role of DJ and also mixes a set for the Kontor Radio Show every other week. Jens Thele, the man behind the scenes, is responsible for anything to do with organisation and Logistics. He is also the one to ensure the band gets back on track after any disputes.,If it wasn’t for this work distribution, Scooter would very probably not be where they are today. Twenty-eight singles and thirteen albums clearly show that Scooter are a lot more than just a project. All critics and doubters will have had to admit that by now too.,Scooter’s new single “Shake That!” sees the band take a brave step by placing H.P.’s shouts over pumping disco house music. This courage has also already been rewarded: “Shake That!” entered the charts at number eight – incidentally making it their seventh Top Ten entry in succession!,Scooter are now about to bring out their fourteenth album. And “Mind The Gap” has many new features to offer: The album will be sold in three different price categories for the first time. In addition to the basic version, which just consists of the simple disc (EUR 9.99), there is also a regular version (EUR 14.99) with a booklet, bonus tracks, video, a making of, photos and interview, as well as a deluxe edition (EUR18.99). The latter contains all the features of the regular version plus a bonus CD with eleven live tracks from the “We Like It Loud Tour 2004”.

  • Skream

London-based producer/DJ Skream (Ollie Jones) played a vital role in the development and popularity of dubstep during the 2000s. Following early collaborations with fellow genre pioneers Benga and Loefah, he released one of dubstep's most easily recognizable tracks, "Midnight Request Line," in 2005. His tracks and remixes helped shift the genre from being a darker, more minimalist form of club music to something more melodic and accessible, paving the way for its mainstream popularity by the beginning of the 2010s. Skream's biggest commercial success was his involvement as part of dubstep supergroup Magnetic Man (with Benga and Artwork), whose self-titled debut album reached number one on the U.K. dance chart. However, while primarily associated with dubstep, Skream has never limited himself to one genre, and much of his work since the mid-2010s has explored house and techno. ~ AllMusic

  • SUB FOCUS

With several tracks to his name all made in the space of the last twelve months 2004 has been a massive year for Nick aka Sub Focus: the year has seen him breakthrough in unprecedented fashion armed with the likes of the technically astounding “Acid Test”, the simple yet devastatingly effective “Strobe”, the lively “Get on Up” and the altoghether awesome “X-Ray”. In a matter of months, he has gone from being one of many wannabe producers to become a permanent fixture of the award winning Ram Records family. Artists like Sub Focus are what “Best Breakthrough Producer” awards are made for.,Even though Nick has been obsessed with dance music, both its creation and its culture for a large chunk of his formative years, his first experience with making music came from playing bass in a rock band at school. However his involvement with the band didn’t last very long as on hearing dance music Nick was totally blown away by it’s diversity and the variety of sounds on offer. Consequently he decided that the tone of rock music didn’t satisfy as he felt it to be far too limited, in contrast Nick found the unlimited tonal possibilities of dance music to be extremely exciting. Particular music that got him hooked included; General Levy’s “Incredible” and most things from Prodigy’s early years.,Nick actually started making beats at the tender age of thirteen on an old Acorn computer, although to begin with he was just messing around he quickly found his passion and this light hearted hobby gradually became an obsession. It’s important to note that until recently Nick has been entirely self taught, his only aid coming from a whole host of software instruction manuals which he enjoyed reading from cover to cover.,Things didn’t really start to happen for him until last year when he made a conscious decision to take his production process extremely seriously. Nick enrolled in a renowned sound engineering course in London’s East End, where he found himself polishing up his self taught skills, whilst also going deeper into the realms of truly understanding the concept of sound.,Eventually Nick managed to make a few things that he felt proud of so he began to give out some CDs for his friends to listen to, only looking for a bit of feedback. However, a certain friend decided to take one of these “Don’t Play Them to Anyone Else” CDs and give one to award winning DJ and Ram Record’s label owner Andy C. On hearing the tracks Andy not only saw talent but he saw a release, within hours Nick had the phone call and within weeks Nick had his first release on Ram’s much respected sister imprint Frequency: a 12" featuring “Down the Drain” with “Hotline” on the flip.,With this new found confidence in mind; in recent months Nick went in the studio and rolled out three brilliant bits of production in quick succession. To Nick’s delight all of them got the stamp of approval; “Acid Test” and “Get On Up” will act as his follow up release on Frequency whilst his brilliant “Strobe” is to be included on Chapter Six of the Ram Raiders series on Ram Records. All the above tracks have been really well received by the scene’s top flight DJs but to Nick’s surprise press and radio have been in support too; they’ve all received regular airplay on both Grooverider’s BBC Radio 1 Drum & Bass show and Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 prime time specialist show.,All that remains to be said is remember the name and watch this space.

  • Sven Väth

Through his recordings, epic-length DJ sets, dozens of commercial mix albums, and label operations, Sven Väth is one German trance and techno's most popular proponents. Originally the lead singer of a dance-pop group named OFF, Väth hit the big time in 1986 when OFF's "Electrica Salsa (Baba Baba)" became a number three pop hit in their native country. The band later disintegrated, leaving Väth free to pursue his interest in the hard trance underground of Frankfurt. An Accident in ParadiseVäth became a DJ of note for his marathon sets, which sometimes approached 24 hours, and his 1992 co-founding of Harthouse Records. His own releases on the label included those by Barbarella, Astral Pilot, and Metal Masters with the help of his partner, Ralf Hildenbeutel. Blessed with an agreement connecting Harthouse and its subsidiaries to the American major label Warner Bros., Väth released Accident in Paradise, again with contributions from Hildenbeutel, as his first solo album.

  • Toman

Now based in Amsterdam, he moved to the Dutch capital in early 2018 — and has barely had time to pause for breath since. A producer who boasts an impressively prolific streak, Toman started his musical journey at an early age. More recently, his unique take on house and techno has led him to much-renowned outlets such as We R House, Cyclic, META, No Art, PIV, Blind Vision and Inermu, yet Toman’s story is no overnight success. On the contrary, his is one that that’s as attributable to a ceaseless work ethic as it is a music-loving upbringing and an unyielding appreciation of sound. Fascinated by all things percussion, Toman began learning the drums in his early teens, a move that would eventually steer him toward what he considers the “unrestrictive complexities of electronic music”. A producer with an endlessly eclectic palette, Toman cites the likes of Underworld, Minilogue, and Terry Lee Brown Jr as influences, all of whom attest in some way to his own eclectic palette. From minimal to tech-house...
