about
Mystery and ambiguity have long been established strategies through which artists can ensure focus remain on their music; for e/tape, who’s originally from Slovenia but spent his last decade between the Balearic Islands and the rest of the planet, it is just his level of commitment to sound.

e/tape is a project built on the kind of uniqueness that only arises from a lifetime fulled by a desire to expand his inner self, the outcome is his way of inviting other's to join on these expanded states of consciousness.

To speak broadly, his work could be described as ambient music, though the associations with the heavenly and blissful that this term creates are lost somewhere on the line. Expect your preconceptions about the importance of pulse, tempo and other western musical basics to evaporate in as subtle and rewarding a fashion as possible; his music will likely sound alien to even the most open-minded listener, therein lies his appeal.

Raised in Düsseldorf but now based in Berlin, Binh has been exploring his deep love for digging for more than a decade. It’s a trait that defines his much-loved sound. • Ricardo Villalobos

As far back as the early '90s, Ricardo Villalobos began building an impressive discography of 12" releases on respected dance labels like Playhouse and Perlon, and around the turn of the decade he was one of the most revered producers and DJs in dance music. In his youth, the Chilean-born Villalobos moved with his family to Germany in order to avoid the military dictatorship of Pinochet, and he eventually fell in with the country's fertile house community. A minimalist at heart, he trotted the globe to study percussion in order to apply his knowledge to his productions, which almost always sound remarkably expansive despite their simplicity. In addition to his own solo material, he has recorded with fellow expatriate Dandy Jack as Ric y Martin and with Luciano as Sense Club; additionally, he has taken part in Markus Nikolai's Hombre Ojo project. ~ AllMusic

  • Sonja Moonear

After studying classical music in her youth, Sonja Moonear set aside the piano in favour of the turntables and bought a Roland R8. Surrounded by the Swiss mountains, Sonja immersed herself in the Geneva underground before finally infiltrating the ranks of the Weetamix residents in 2002. From that point on, participating in ever more ambitious projects, she was tapped by an international agency and started the road trip. Moonear slowly began collaborating with artists and friends like Luciano or Cosmic Chile Zürich, along with Dandy Jack as Junction SM. She has acquired an impressive international reputation, playing in clubs and festivals worldwide. In the last couple of years she has been releasing her own tracks and remixes on renowned international labels such as Karat and Perlon. She runs the label Ruta5 and organises various events in Switzerland as well as the growing Kiss Me festival.

̸BIOGRAPHY There’s only a handful of DJ’s I’ve ever heard who are naturally gifted and Alex Downey is one of them,” says techno don Ben Sims at whose Split/Balance nights Downey has shared the stage with luminaries such as Robert Hood, Oscar Mulero, & The Advent There’s only a handful of DJ’s I’ve ever heard who are naturally gifted and Alex Downey is one of them,” says techno don Ben Sims at whose Split/Balance nights Downey has regularly played. Based in Brighton, Alex fell in love with techno from seeing the likes of Derrick May and Dave Clarke at the Zap Club in the early nineties, and his regular pilgrimages to London’s Lost parties were an inspiration, where Jeff Mills became a massive influence on his musical perspective. Alex Downey has been an ardent supporter of quality underground music and a prominent purveyor of all things electronic as a DJ, vinyl pusher, and radio presenter for well over two decades. Alex was a key figure behind the counter at Brighton's legendary Covert Records and has amassed an immense record collection spanning the house, techno and electro spectrum, while his unrestricted sets behind the decks have earned him much respect and a great reputation amongst the global electronic community. Alex has been a resident at the celebrated Freerotation Festival from it’s inception, and is currently a resident DJ at Brighton’s ‘First Floor’ party, playing alongside the likes of Function and XDB. He’s DJed at such diverse events as Wiggle, Split, Fabric, Labyrinth Festival in Japan, The Big-Beat Boutique, The Essential Festival and continues to play the best parties. But just as important to his career arc are the hundreds of smaller parties and long-forgotten club nights that rocked hard and kept the lifeblood of the scene pumping. Alex's style behind the turntables defies categorization. For him techno isn't a dogma so much as a spirit of electronic freedom to adapt and embrace new styles. He is highly rated by DJs and is regarded as a keeper of the flame. He’s the high priest at his new business venture; ‘The Temple of Vinyl’, a monumental warehouse stocked floor to ceiling with the black gold, whilst his broad taste and consummate selection skills can be heard on his ‘Voyage De Lux’ radio shows, on Brighton’s 1BTN FM every other Wednesday night. More recently, Alex has become a Third Ear resident DJ, as the seminal label seeks to bring together a select group of idiosyncratic DJs that showcase the label’s ethos, and is now represented by the ‘Guaranteed Connection Artists’ agency

  • ALFOS (Sean Johnston)

̸BIOGRAPHY All of the Hardway Bros and one half of A Love From Outer Space. ‘I know where she’s coming from, Space is where we both belong’ A.R. Kane From mountain scaler to highly respected purveyor of the finest music money can’t buy, professional beat-raconteur and upstanding member of the disco dance music community, Mr Sean Johnston creates ethereal sonic landscapes both in his productions and behind the decks of any dancefloor. DJ'ing since his formative years in the frozen Northern reaches of Yorkshire Johnston has been many things; Acid-House Veteran, Techno Survivor, Alpinist, Hardway Bros and Freelance Disco Consultant but it is his recent production work and now legendary club night that he has best become known for the world over. From the early 90’s institution that was Sabresonic (also releasing on the label) to Disco Bloodbath, Sean has played at many of London's landmark clubs. He also plays regularly at Berlin's premier underground venue Salon Zur Wilden Renate, festivals in French castles and the Dalmatian coast, as well as across the whole breadth of this fine aural landscape we live in. Moving to London back in 1988, Johnston got to know Jeff Barrett of the highly respected Heavenly Recordings and Mr Andrew Weatherall. “We’ve been in and out of each other’s orbits ever since.” It was in a recent orbit on a drive down to Brighton one night that Johnston & Weatherall discovered they shared a love of the slowed-down rhythms of new beat, disco, kosmische, and weird, slow psychedelic music. From this journey, grew the beginnings of A Love From Outer Space (ALFOS) club night. “There was no masterplan to slow things down, it was just that Andrew and I had been listening to the same type of music and we thought, okay 80 people in a basement, we’ll give it a go and see how it works out.” says Johnston with customary modesty. What ensued has gone on to become one of the most revered clubs of recent times. In an age where residencies don’t exist Johnston and Weatherall flipped this concept on its head. A refuge from the frenetic ‘velocity’ of modern developments, ALFOS is an oasis of slow in an increasingly sped up world - the club's manifesto never knowingly exceeds 122bpm. “The ALFOS sound is the distillation of 25 years of record buying by two music fans. The kind of music that we play is very similar in attitude to the Balearic stuff that Andrew was playing 20 years ago but it’s informed by all the progressive house and techno of the ‘90s, disco, psychedelic music, kraut-rock; kind of a distillation of 25 years of listening to music.” says Sean. You could also throw ambient, balearic, proto-house, dub-sonority, un-disco and other experimental curiosities into the mix but these are mere labels; what’s important is the ethos engendered within it all. This is body music for discerning musical ears, first and foremost. What started life in fabled dingy Stoke Newington basement The Drop has mutated into a worldwide phenomenon and gone on to influence a whole new wave of producers. Such is the night's popularity, the meteoric ascendancy has seen the pair take ALFOS to clubs and festivals throughout Europe. Sean and Andrew now hold down a cult residency at Corsica Studios in London, a Glasgow base at the Berkeley Suite, as well as the yearly, near mythical scenes from the Croatian Balearic festival jewel in the crown; Electric Elephant. Their epic 5 hour set in 2013 was one of the most talked about - and rightly so - sets of the summer. But A Love From Outer Space isn’t an exercise in rose-tinted retrospection or self-applauding egotism. This is a clear stretching of selection which journeys further, towards the peripheries, giving new life to old, leftfield eccentricities and airing the young and recent in proximity, with finely judged style. When asked where they unearth all these obscurities Johnston replies “They’re all out there. It’s just that we’re digging in different places to other people. There are a few obscure things we play, but the majority of any of our sets is made up of music we’ve sourced from outlets open to anyone. It’s not stuff we’ve been sent, downloaded or promoted.” And herein lies the beauty of Johnston’s approach to music. “I’d like to be Adrian Sherwood’s teaboy for a few weeks. He opened the door to Dub for me and made me want to know how records are made.” As one half of revered production outfit, The Hardway Brothers (he now often produces under this moniker solo) and prominent voice in earlier classic-acid project, The Flash Faction, Johnston has also successfully transferred this innate understanding of a dancefloor into studio alchemy. Sean's productions in their own right have, as Hardway Bros has graced Beard Science, Aniligital, History Clock, Astrolab, Luna Flicks, I'm A Cliche, Is It Balearic? and hot New York label, Throne of Blood. He is an in-demand remixer, having reworked artists such as Alien Alien, Max Essa, The Asphodells, Haules Baules, Adonis, TOY, Tal Kein & Anthony Mansfield, Craig Bratley and Ajello. With a plethora of remixes and productions in the pipeline for the likes of Ewan Pearson's Misericord label and S'Express each one shows an increased and profound comprehension of the ever expanding musical landscape..

  • Awkward Moments

̸BIOGRAPHY Awkward Moments are London-based electronica duo comprising of Mimi Xu – producer, DJ, and electronic composer, and MAGUIRE – multi instrumentalist and lead vocalist. Awkward Moments is the birth child of dj, producer and composer Mimi Xu. Xu has always been interested in the relationship between music and performance art, exploring the field of ‘Expanded Cinema’ – a term coined in the mid-1960s by American experimental filmmaker Stan Vanderbeek that describes work both inside and outside of the gallery including live performance, projector pieces, video and a range of media environments. Awkward Moments was born out of this concept, and was first launched in London in May 2017. For series V – premiered at Houghton Festival 2018 – Xu brought in classically trained multi-instrumentalist and singer MAGUIRE to co-write and perform the 40 minute piece of music entitled ‘An Entropic Cycle’. Xu and MAGUIRE layer interweaving electronic beats over organic instruments and atmospheric vocals to mirror the relationship between the tangible and the ethereal; between fragmentation and order. This concept is further explored visually using multi-media projection of abstract moving imagery. Awkward Moments is divided into six chapters each one leading us through the different cycles of life, death and rebirth. In the words of Virginia Woolf - ‘I see myself as a fish in a stream; deflected; held in place; but cannot describe the stream.’ This is their attempt to recreate that stream of existence through sound experiments and pychadelic visual journeys. Xu and MAGUIRE are currently in the studio finishing their follow up album 'A Strange Odyssey' which they will release and tour later this year.

Armed wit.. One minute he’s rocking the roof off at Fabric with his tough and funky big-room underground house; the next he’s charming the pants off a more intimate crowd with everything from dubby disco, funk and hip-hop to trip hop and Latin batucadas. Armed with a sensitivity and sense of occasion that few DJs possess Bill Brewster knows how to work a crowd in the best possible sense. Originally a chef, a football pundit (co-editor of fanzine When Saturday Comes) and record collector, Bill began DJing in in the late 80s, but he cut his teeth playing ‘Low Life’ warehouse parties in Harlem and the East Village – he moved to NYC to run DMC’s US operation – and anyone hearing Bill today can see how these New York ‘roots’ shine through. For eclecticism, surprises, amazing unique music and sheer long-haul dedication to the dancefloor, Bill’s your man. His other life is as a writer. Together with long-term pal Frank Broughton, Bill is author of the definitive history of DJing, Last Night A DJ Saved My Life, and has contributed his acid Grimsby wit and encyclopaedic knowledge of music to just about every dance rag there is, not to mention The Guardian, Independent and Mail On Sunday. The Brewster-Broughton double act unveiled their latest hit in 2002 with the uniquely sardonic DJ manual How To DJ (Properly). They have recently completed an updated version of Last Night A DJ Saved My Life that will be published in June, along with a double CD from Universal. He’s an industry insider, having brought Twisted records to the UK and launched his own highly successful deep house label Forensic. In his spare time he is often found in the studio, either with Fat Camp partner, Theo Noble, re-editing old disco, funk and rock records; or producing original music. They run a small edit label Disco Sucks. As his hero Kid Creole would say, 'Annie I'm not your daddy.' WHAT THE PRESS SAY ABOUT BILL “Brilliant.” Mixmag “What Bill Brewster doesn’t know about disc jockeying is probably not worth knowing.” Jockey Slut “What’s the best reason for playing a record? Because you love it. What’s the best reason for starting a party? Because no one else is doing it like you can. It’s pretty simple really, but so many DJs and promoters forget what got them excited in the first place. Bill Brewster hasn’t. The encouragement of DJs like Rocky (X-Press 2) and Jon ‘Beloved’ Marsh and promoters like Nikki Smith at Fabric (who rave about him) has spurred him on and club crowds are responding, too.” Time Out “One of Fabric’s heroes is behind the decks for one of his multi-genre embracing sessions. It’s going to be a late one.” Metro “The glamorous and bewitching Bill Brewster steps up to the ones and twos for more high-quality action. “ Tim Out New York “You know people who memorise every release and DJ shoe size right back to 1875? That’s the Faith posse, that is. Led by Terry Farley and Bill Brewster, they’re a bit long in the tooth now – they’d have to be to have this musical knowledge – but this is simply unmissable: beautiful, varied and at times even tear-jerking.” Ministry on Faith Vol 1 CD “The greatest book ever written about dance music.” Daily Mirror on Last Night A DJ Saved My Life ̸SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY Group Therapy - Arty-Fact (Kamera Records, 1982) Superstars Of Rock - Orange Sunshine (World Discotheque Movement Mix) (5X0-294, 1994) Various - Praxis (Hooj Choons, 2002) Mixed Jackson 5 - Body Language (Fat Camp Edit) (Motown, 2005) Fat Camp - Don't Blame Us 4 The Boogie (Disco Sucks, 2005) Imagine Magic (BB Edit) (Anorak, 2009) Hotel Motel - Paying The Price/Novak (Under The Shade, 2010) Hotel Motel - Eye No (Home Taping, 2010)

̸BIOGRAPHY BURNT FRIEDMAN is one of Germany’s most long established and highly rated electronic musicians with a career spanning almost 40 years. BURNT FRIEDMAN was born in Coburg, Germany in 1965 and has lived in Berlin since 2009. After initially being a student of art in Kassel in northern Germany, Burnt started to focus on music exclusively from the late 1980s onwards. He went on to attend the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne as a postgraduate student and began to publish his musical works along with his studio productions in 1979. He also began performing live around the same time, both of which soon attracted the attention of the Cologne electronic music scene. From there he progressed to various notable music collaborations throughout the 1990s on projects with the likes of Jaki Liebezeit, Hayden Chisholm, Root70, Mark Ernestus, Steve Jansen and David Sylvian and under also under the band names of both Atom™ and Flanger. In 2000 Friedman launched his own record label, Nonplace, with 35 releases to date. Working under the solo artist name of BURNT FRIEDMAN, he sought to address the prejudices people had then about the authenticity of programmed music. His studio and on-stage partnership with Jaki Liebezeit, the former drummer of CAN (recently voted in the Top 5 drummers for alternative music of all time in SPIN magazine in the US), now dates back 13 years; the two musicians have developed pioneering electronic-acoustic music over that period. On the strength of their craft and universal musical vocabulary they have consciously distanced themselves from the tarditional formulas of Western European and Anglo-American music. Their recordings and work should be seen as intermediate phases in an on-going process. BURNT FRIEDMAN’s work has been critically acclaimed by the international music press as far afield as The Wire, Mixmag and Uncut in the UK, Exclaim magazine in Canada. The All Music Guide and Big Shot magazine in the US. Data Transmission in the UK described his recent album release with Jaki Liebezeit as “destined for cult success“, with The Arts Desk making it their Album Of The Week. He will be releasing a new album in the fall and carrying out a tour of Africa in association with The Goethe Institue too. ̸ SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY • Drome, The Final Corporate Colonization Of The Unconscious, LP/CD, 1994 (Ninja Tune) • Nonplace Urban Field , 4 Albums CD/LP, 1993- 1997 (Incoming!) • Burnt Friedman & The Nu Dub Players, Just Landed, CD/LP (Scpae Records / 1999) • Flanger (with AtomTM) 3 Albums CD/LP/12", 1996 - 2000 (Ninja Tune) • Flanger (with AtomTM), Spirituals, CD/LP, 2005 (Nonplace 18) • Nine Horses, (with David Sylvian/Steve Jansen) Snow Borne Sorrow, CD, 2006 (Samadhisound) • Burnt Friedman & Jaki Liebezeit, Secret Rhythms 1-5, 4 Albums CD/LP 2000-2013 (Nonplace 09/19/25/30) • Burnt Friedman vs. Konono Nr.1 12" (CNG), 2010 CD Tradimods vs. Rockers (Crammed Discs) • Burnt Friedman, Zen'Aku 12" EP 2011 (Nonplace 31) • Burnt Friedman meets Zinja Hlungwani 12" 2011 (Honest Jon´s records) • Burnt Friedman "Bokoboko" CD/D-LP 2012 (Nonplace33) • Cyclopean (with Irmin Schmidt/Jaki Liebezeit, Can), EP, 2013 (Mute) Remixes 2012: MaisUmDiscos Lucas Santtana Ca Pra Nos, Friedman Remix 2011: Honest Jons Records Burnt Friedman Meets Zinja Hlungwani 2011: Crammed Disc (D-CD)/ cng (Vinyl) Konono No.1 Rubazech Friedman Remix 2010: Nonplace Prof.Psygrooves Flow, Friedman Remix 2010: Nonplace Friedman & Liebezeit Remixes 2007: Samadhi Sound Nine Horses Remixes 2006: 4AD His Name Is Alive Remixes 2006: G-Stone Tosca, John Lee Huber Remix 2005: Samadhi Sound David Sylvian, Blemish/Late Night Shopping Remixes 2003: Nonplace Lychelassi, Shades Of Mosley Remix 2003: Silent Recordings Prop, Erste Landung Remix 2003: Open record (South Africa) Benguela, Southern Right Dub Remix 2001: Scape Pole Raum1 Remix 2001: District Six, Wiliam Rusere, Shona Folk melodies Remix 2000: G-Stone Tosca, Suzuki Remix 2000: Round Trip Mars, Phase 5, Mothman Skunk Remix Tours & Live Shows • Liebezeit & Friedman Live: 18th April, Bucharest, Romania, Recolektiv Festival / Friedman & Liebezeit 1st May, Katowice, Poland, Jazzart Festival / Friedman & Liebezeit 4th May, Cologne, Achtbrücken Festival / Friedman & Liebezeit 5th Sep, Copenhagen, Jazzhouse 6th Sep, Malmö, Inkonst 21st Sep, Wien, Porgy & Bess 28th Sep, Brüssel, Bozar Music Festival • Burnt Friedman Solo: 30th June, Wax Treatment, Berlin 14th July, Free Rotation Festival, Bristol, UK 4th October, Lagos, Nigeria 7th October, Nairobi, Kenya, with Otieno Wakake 10th October, Kampala, Uganda, with Hakimu Kiwanuka 13th October, Johannesburg, South Africa, with Tlale Makhene

  • Danielle

̸BIOGRAPHY When a true selector takes flight, it sounds as though they re-mould each track to fit their specific vision. That’s exactly the effect Danielle has as a DJ, drawing across stylistic divides to create an instinctive groove which is all her own. On top of a foundational core of house, techno and electro she folds in myriad sonic wildcards to create dynamic, innovative variations on the club music experience. It’s logical her tastes would be omnivorous – Danielle spent 10 years working at fabled London record shop Phonica, one of the definitive destinations for dance music in the city, as well as a lengthy tenure at iconic Bristol store Idle Hands. Being across new releases week in, week out is one thing, but knowing how to stitch them together is another. From the breakthrough years perfecting the craft of a great warm-up to her long-standing residency on NTS Radio since 2017, Danielle shaped her approach to DJing from a free-thinking, fluid angle which still rings true now she’s more commonly found at the top of the bill. Danielle’s DJing has touched upon vital events, venues and locations around the world, from touring the US and playing flagship festivals like Glastonbury, Dimensions, Kala and Love International, to clubs like DC10, Fabric, The White Hotel, Corsica Studios and Tresor, holding down a residency season for Colour Factory in London and Left Bank in Tbilisi, and frequently picked for parties as revered as Timedance, Herrensauna and Livity Sound. In tandem, her skills have been recognised by key publications including Mixmag, DJ Mag (she was nominated as a best breakthrough DJ in 2020) and Resident Advisor. Beyond her own DJ work (she’s also a frequent contributor to many a mix series), Danielle also takes the time to impart her experience and knowledge to the next generation via her classes at Mix Nights – a non-profit organisation she helped set up seven years ago to encourage women and non-binary people to explore the art of DJing. Elsewhere, she works in an A&R and consultancy capacity for Team Love – a role which speaks to her consistent instinct for new developments within club music. Similarly, her label Soft Raw was founded in 2022 as a platform to champion the fresh talent she comes across in her position as a revered DJ. All these elements feed into the overall mission Danielle is on, pursuing her love of dynamic, physical soundsystem music with errant coding in its DNA. Keyed into new revolutions in the ever-evolving culture of the dancefloor, Danielle melds her impeccable taste together with fierce commitment and flair, delivering the impulse to move and presenting wholly new ideas to any crowd, any party, any time, anywhere.

̸BIOGRAPHY DJ KOOLT Experiencing from the beginning, step by step, the evolution of the electronic scene in Montevideo and influenced since very young by the most avant-garde sounds, nowadays there’s no doubt whatsoever about his being the most relevant model in the Uruguayan scene, after the great influence he has already stamped in several generations of local artists. Certain dj’s manage to go beyond the barrier of just playing music and create an atmosphere with a different energy, a result of mixing good music selection, according to each moment, and an exquisite technique to mix it. These are two features that have marked Eduardo Cardozo aka DJ KOOLT and MR. KOOLT since his very beginnings. Dj Koolt is one of the greatest exponents of the Uruguayan underground scene and a faithful collector of vinyl records. He also earned an European recognition by playing in many great parties such as FUSE (Brussels), Closer (Kiev), Club Eden (Bucharest), Closer (Kiev), Cartulis Music (London), Concrete (Paris), RED58 (Barcelona), OHM and Hoppetosse (Berlin), Goa (Rome) and much more. Playing for 20 friends at an after-hours or for 1000 people at some club, one can easily recognize Edu by a natural characteristic of his: the connection and the trance he is able to create in his audience. In 2013, he and two friends opened Phonotheque, the only club 100% devoted to Underground electronics in Uruguay and one of the best in the region. Few months after opening, Phonotheque became an important reference point at a national and international level and promoting their own style and distancing itself from conventional electronic music.

Few DJs and producers are as widely and universally acclaimed in techno circles as Italian Donato Dozzy. He has a rare ability to work his way into peoples’ minds in both contemporary and classical settings, conjuring real mood and atmosphere. Never one to pay heed to the zeitgeist, he prefers to deal in hypnotic soundscapes that really take you on a trip. Enigmatic as he is, and laidback as he seems, as an artist he is constantly unveiling new work. Displaying a large variation in terms of sound and method across many new releases each year — some of which come on his co-owned label Spazio Disponibile — he also puts out installations for public spaces and museums, uses obscure musical instruments, collaborates with likeminded producers, classical singers or visual artists. Donato seems to continuously challenge himself on a creative level: whatever method he uses, though, he is always likely to permeate your cerebral cortex and rewire it in fascinating and compelling new ways.

̸BIOGRAPHY With individuality and experimentation at her core, Ellie Stokes is very much her own DJ. Having immersed herself in Bristol’s music scene since arriving in the late 00s, she could reasonably be considered a product of the city’s unique creative culture. Let’s sidestep tired ideas about trip hop and D&B for a second and focus on the West Country capital as a hotbed of broadminded experimentation, with a community ethos and supportive framework that encourages talent to shine through. Stokes was already working within the music industry when she started to channel her passion into DJing – she was working at vital independent venue The Love Inn, one of the hubs of Bristol’s underground music culture, where she’s now the booking agent and venue manager. When the female / non-binary Mix Nights DJ course began (helmed by leading lights such as Danielle and Daisy Moon), Stokes found the right nurturing environment to discover her instinct for selecting and spinning, initiating a career which has grown exponentially ever since. In 2018 she became a resident at Bristol’s leading club space Motion, and played life-affirming slots at premier league events and spaces such as Glastonbury, Love International, Warehouse Project, Love Saves The Day, Corsica Studios and Simple Things. As well as her dancefloor presence, where she’s likely to be plying leftfield house and techno tinged with industrial and 90s motifs, Stokes has a regular radio outlet via Bristol’s leading station, Noods. It’s on these shows her tastes truly open up, touching on ambient techno and electronica, all manner of wave-related sonics, EBM and much more besides. It’s a non-conformist style that favours individual expression over generic consistency, championing the omnivorous spirit of the times and presenting selections that feel honest, heartfelt and constantly surprising. Stokes’ musical endeavours reach beyond her DJing too – she also helps steer the city’s much-loved queer dance party Bitch, Please! and came on board as a partner in Futureboogie, which will soon branch out into a new label project in the near future. Her keen ear for the unusual and distinctive shine through in these ventures as much as when she’s on the decks, rounding out her positive contributions to all corners of the music scene in Bristol and beyond. She may be representative of the city as it stands right now, but Ellie Stokes is just as much her own vital energy in a tangled network of scenes, communities, parties and platforms that stretches out internationally.

  • Freedom Engine

̸BIOGRAPHY Worthwhile albums tend to be as much about the process of making them as they are about the end products themselves. One can almost hear formal, technical, even philosophical questions being asked and answered on them in order to arrive at something personally and politically new for the artist. "A Box Full of Magic," at once sprawling, cosmic, and psychedelic in the best of ways, follows in this album-making tradition. It is a record steeped in off kilter percussive time, live recording, occasionally summer cloud-paced tempos, and lush, emotional, melodic instrumentation. "A Sunrise On the Front," the final track of the record (and a composition crushing in its beauty), encapsulates much of this: recorded live on a Rhodes, the melody gives voice to the paradoxical sense of hope even during the pathology of war. Such conceptual ambition fits perfectly well within the capacious vision of Mathew Jonson's Freedom Engine, a project whose very name seems to explore and allow for the conceptual paradox and complexity of approaching freedom through the engine of technology. In a fundamental sense this tension between freedom and machine informs much of the album proper. Desiring to break out of his old ways of production and the boxes that went with it, the album abounds with fresh fascinations in things like the sound of mathematical equations, quirky time signatures, and experimental phrasing through intuitive timings to unlock a sense of magic, play, and spontaneity. There is, likewise, an interest in the liberating potential of deconstructing old sounds to make new ones, as Jonson applies techniques like innovative noise gating on classic drum samples to create space age percussion. At other moments, on "The Very Strange," for instance, air itself is sampled in field recordings to create unnatural percussive patterns. As is often the case with Jonson's work, an encyclopaedia of machines and synths are employed in the making of 'A Box Full of Magic," but what is perhaps new here, and in keeping with the dialectic he traces between freedom/engine, is that there is a non-mechanistic, spontaneous impulse at work in the recordings. While it is not a live album, it has an at times spiritual and organic inclination despite or perhaps because of the way his panoply of gear--Prophet 5, CS60, VCS3, et al--attempts to capture dream-like tonalities that can reach poetic heights on a track like the aforesaid "Sunrise" or morph into an almost diabolical, Lynchian dimension on "An Evil Charm (Where Is the Forest)." But while it is tempting to get lost in the trees of synth-arcana with Jonson's work, we should not lose sight of the forest here: With its openness to new ideas which in turn generate an album teeming with them, "Box Full of Magic" helps to expand the sonic vocabulary of contemporary dance music. Mathew Jonson lives and works in Berlin. He has been experimenting with electronic music since 1986. ̸SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY A Box Full Of Magic - Dekmantel - 2019

  • Gigi Masin

Calypso “[My parents] simply didn’t understand why I’d love to study music. They believed to study music or to become a musician or composer was a silly idea...I had to find my own way and it wasn’t so easy.” The words of the Venetian composer, musician, producer, and polymath Gigi Masin ring true in the ears of those young and old, past present and future, who want to be creative but feel restrained by family and society. Always an innovator, Gigi’s first experiments in the late 1970s were sound collages made while working for theatres in Venice, working with tape loops, field recordings, and turntablism. Experimenting with tape allowed him to discover a new language to express himself, more than in his original ambitions to be a guitarist and violinist, looked down upon by his parents. It was difficult to find a local audience for these works, culminating in the release of his debut album Wind in 1987. A nation and society at the forefront of so many strands of Western music and high culture, Italy was staid and traditional. Gigi believed there to be “a poor sense of culture and a sort of intellectual haughtiness in the Italian media about Italian musicians in general” – especially if they had anything to do with the avantgarde. The music on Wind is stripped back, bare, almost alien in their stillness, with the steady pulse of his beloved Korg Poly-800 echoing the lagoon waters around him. Underappreciated on its release, Wind soon gained a cult following among late night radio listeners, hearing these gentle echoes of the Venetian landscape, reflecting a personal outlook on Venice from a native son; a rare artifact in a world where the platonic Venice can be heard and seen from artists the world over, but images and sounds of the actual Venice are harder to come by. Gigi is a rare exception. Released for free, Gigi never expected much to come of it. His 1989 joint album for Sub Rosa with This Heat’s Charles Hayward, Les Nouvelles Musiques Du Chambre, took on a life of its own when his track Clouds was sampled by Björk, To Rococo Rot, Nujabes, Black Eyed Peas, and Post Malone – but Gigi remained in obscurity. His output slowed from the early 90s as he raised a family and worked dutifully for Il Posto. Tragedy struck in 2007 when a flood destroyed the vast majority of his archives: instruments, tapes, records, and memorabilia. Salvaging what he could, he took to the computer for the first time, starting the next phase of innovating. In 2014, Dutch label Music From Memory released Talk To The Sea, a retrospective of the past 30 years of Gigi’s output, favorites handpicked by label heads Jamie Tiller and Tako Reyenga. It marked the start of the wider recognition Gigi so richly deserved, receiving praise from media and figures like Devendra Banhart, who claimed to listen to the album daily, praising in an interview in The Quietus how his music “is representative of the entire spectrum of emotions, which is what I think I, as a fan of music, am often looking for”. Through the label, Gigi met British producer and Melody As Truth label head Jonny Nash and cult Dutch DJ and producer Marco Sterk (Young Marco), forming the trio Gaussian Curve and releasing their debut Clouds on the label in 2015. Gigi says it was “an instant friendship”, a dream collaboration where they only had to sit in a studio and “let the music fill the space”. Back in Italy – where he remains, just outside Venice, having left his post office job to devote himself to music full-time – he struck up a relationship with Luciano Ermondi and Paolo Mazzacani of Tempelhof after a show in Mantua; their two joint albums for Italian label Hell Yeah – Hoshi and Tsuki – came in bursts of inspiration, virtually but simply. Gigi also appeared on PAN as part of Lifted, a group spearheaded by Future Times founder Andrew Field-Pickering (Max D / Beautiful Swimmers), also featuring Matthew Papich (Co La), Jeremy Hyman (Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks), Motion Graphix, Jordan Czamanski (Juju & Jordash), and Dawit Eklund (1432 R). A series of singles came on Throne of Blood, Dekmantel, and Light In The Attic, along with dates at festivals, galleries, and opening for Oneohtrix Point Never and Devendra Banhart. With more international tour dates, upcoming collaborations, an upcoming album of new material - Calypso - on R&S/Apollo, and a continuous refusal to be pigeonholed as ambient, new age, Balearic, modern classical, or whatever you wish to call him, Gigi Masin continues to be one of the most quietly innovative and singular artists in the scene. Not wanting to rest on his laurels and remain tethered to past triumphs, he remains facing forward, doing things “in the same way I did in the past, when nobody cared”.

  • Hamish & Toby

̸BIOGRAPHY Norfolk's no1 left handed DJ duo. For some dance music fans, Hamish & Toby may be their new favourite DJs thanks to a recent US tour and excellent sets at festivals like Glastonbury, Dimensions, Houghton and Freerotation. 2022 was, after all, a breakthrough year for the UK duo. But in their own, close-knit world of Discogs fanatics and vinyl purists, Hamish Cole and Toby Wareham are admired and established names. They met while studying in Leeds, bonding over a shared love of wiggly bombs at countless clubs and hazy afterparties. They ran events (Butter Side Up, Dog Eat Dog), DJ'd tirelessly and continued to dig for obscure gems. Within a few years, they were both working full-time music jobs in London, running Dimensions Festival (Hamish) and The Pickle Factory (Toby). All in all, they've dedicated the past 15 years of their lives to dance music. For all their behind-the-scenes work, Hamish & Toby's true love is DJing together. They're known for their long, expressive sets that go, in their own words, "all over the map." Their timeless selections, and adventurous genre-bending style, has made them ones to watch on the deep digging DJ circuit. Bookings: jodie@mdcberlin.com

  • Hannah Holland

̸BIOGRAPHY DJ.Producer.Label Boss Hannah Holland has played a pivotal role in London’s alternative and queer London club scene since the mid-noughties, arriving on dancefloors sharing electro tinged techno but equally inspired by the influential sounds of DnB and jungle heard at legendary parties such as Metalheadz, which she had frequented in her early teens. The cultural melting pot of London, community, musical exploration and the transcendent potential of dancefloor have always been her biggest inspiration. Having already been “borrowing” (and perhaps never since returning) Kraftwerk, Grace Jones and Talking Heads records from her parents, the influence of this metropolitan musical soup ensured that Holland emerged on the decks with a unique musical character and diverse taste, hallmarks of her sound that she has not lost since, whether undertaking residencies at iconic parties such as Trailer Trash, rocking Glastonbury’s hedonistic and spectacular NYC Downlow, or undertaking far-reaching marathon sets at Berlin’s Panorama Bar. Founded in 2009 as both a record label and party, Batty Bass began Holland’s outlet to explore the disparate strains of electro, acid, techno and house that drive her charismatic DJ sets forward, delivering party-friendly wax cuts from like-minded producers such as Josh Caffe, The Carry Nation, Mama, Lauren Flax and Justin Robertson’s Deadstock 33s. The imprint also provided Holland with a self-determined platform for her own music, memorably including ‘Paris’ Acid Ball’, an acid-tinged anthem that continues to summon voguing sweat in queer spaces worldwide. Holland scored another anthemic moment in 2017, in collaboration with longtime friend and creative partner Josh Caffe on ‘Fade To Me’, released on Crosstown Rebels, following the ‘Lush EP’ ft. IMMA/MESS, via seminal UK house imprint, Classic Music. Meanwhile, her powerful remixes of DJ Hell, Goldfrapp, The Knife, Planningtorock remain as forward-thinking and exciting as the acts themselves. In 2019, Batty Bass will release a wealth of new material from Holland herself, developed alongside her role writing, producing and playing with the dark-pop band, Black Gold Buffalo, who released their self-titled, long-awaited debut album in 2018. Capturing much of the same rave euphoria and timeless sound in her early work, Holland’s upcoming releases reflect the changes in the landscape of UK dance. Recent appearances have included Fabric for the extravagant Lovechild/Vogue Ball, alongside the notorious London underground parties Savage, Chapter 10 and Adonis. On the fringes of the capital, Holland is a regular at the annual Field Manuevers boutique festival, and across the Atlantic, has guested at the infamous US rave The Carry Nation, alongside her recurring appointments at Panorama Bar in Berlin. ̸SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY 2018 Black Magik Dawn - Josh Caffe (Prod. Born and raised on the West coast of Wales in his family jazz cafe / art gallery (Peppers). With no local clubs Harri's first taste of Djing was at free parties in the deep valleys and mountains of Pembrokeshire. After playing the first event for 'Stamp the Wax' in 2013, Harri was welcomed as consigliere and chief resident DJ; representing the collective across the festival and club circuit of Europe. Now settled into London you can catch him at London’s finest basement; 17 Little Portland Street or at his longstanding Saturday night residency with London's iconic music venue The Jazz Cafe. His musical ear forever growing as his time behind the counter at 'Yo-Yo Records London' continues within the beautifully curated store. Harri's twisted 'Sunday Uppers' party at The Lion and Lamb invites special guests for extended sessions, delving deeper into the Sunday sounds. Picked up by Dimensions festival in 2017 as member of the ‘DJ Directory’, Harri's broad selections don't go unnoticed. Now making movements up and down the UK / Europe playing anything; whether it be cruising warmups or hectic closes, Harri has certainly built up a reputation for his no-nonsense party starting and odd ball selection. • Howie B

̸BIOGRAPHY One of the most respected electronic composers of the '90s, Howie B is a sonic polymath whose production work with U2, Bjork, Tricky, Brian Eno, Sinead O'Connor, Sly and Robbie and Everything But The Girl has made him an ace hired gun often called upon.. Howie B / Biography 2010 One of the most respected electronic composers of the '90s, Howie B is a sonic polymath whose production work with U2, Bjork, Tricky, Brian Eno, Sinead O'Connor, Sly and Robbie and Everything But The Girl has made him an ace hired gun often called upon to give pop stars credit in the dance world. Born in Glasgow during the 60s, Howard Bernstein grew up in an unenviable position; a Jewish child within the west of Scotland's sectarian divide. Rejecting all forms of bigotry and division he found solace in music. Invigorated by John Peel's scattershot broadcasts, he began collecting 70's vinyl from the likes of John McLaughlin, Santana and Gong. After moving to London he gained production skills with a 3 year stint at Lilley Yard in Fulham, manning the controls for Swing Out Sister and the Siouxsie and the Banshees. By the mid 80s Howie was part of Soul II Soul's 'weekend posse' and reinforced the connection with Nellee Hooper and Jazzy B with contributions to the first Soul II Soul album. During the 90s he worked with Massive Attack and a pre-jungle Goldie, began releasing 'Howie B Inc' 12s on James Lavelle's Mo' Wax label and helped to programme Tricky's Island-deal securing demo’s. 1993 saw the launch of his own imprint, Pussyfoot, and two years later he collaborated on and co-produced U2s 'Pop' album. He was invited to produce the live sound for its accompanying world tour, a project that went far beyond previous attempts in merging rock spectacle and electronic ingenuity. Howie continued a small-but-steady stream of material. Moving hip-hop instrumentals a step beyond the experimental joined him with beat junkies like DJ Shadow, U.N.K.L.E., Portishead, and Coldcut at the forefront of a U.K. breakbeat renaissance. Although his genre-spanning work with Skylab on 1994's '#1' brought his talents for organized chaos before a wider audience, it was ultimately his role in the production chair for such artists as Tricky, Björk and, eventually, U2 that landed him a multi-album recording deal with Polydor, yielding LPs including 1996's 'Music for Babies', 1997's 'Turn the Dark Off', 1999's 'Snatch' and followed by 'Folk' in 2001. He provided music for Wim Wenders' movie 'End of Violence' and the short film by Run Wrake that accompanied Music For Babies has won numerous awards. Recent production work has included Happy Mondays' first album in 14 years, which is also set to feature a guest appearance from Ry Cooder. His most recent releases include ‘Last Bingo In Paris’ for French label Stereo Pictures and 'Mayonnaise' (a collaboration with Crispin Hunt and Will O’Donovan) for U.S. label Lunatic Works/BMG. Recently Howie has been involved in the world of fashion, working with Italian Fashion House Fornari in the creation of his design collection HVANA. Music For Astronauts and Cosmonauts is his first collaboration with Icelandic musician and artist Húbert Nói, produced over the last eight years in the legendary Greenhouse Studio in Reykjavik. Both recently performed the show with cellist Borgar Magnason at the Donaufestival in Austria. Over the last few years he has been working in China with young musicians (and older ones), there he has been focusing on sharing his production skills with the emerging music scene. He recorded an album with Ciu Cian the "rock god" of China in 2008/9 and wrote and produced for Sa Ding Ding who featured in the film score he created for the Chinese Film Production of "Gasp". Last year Howie formed a band with members of the Italian group Marlene Kuntz and their producer Gianni Maroccolo . The name of the band is "Beautiful" and their album will be released later on this year. At present he is relaunching his label Pussyfoot and setting up another label with Craig Richards that will focus primarily on dance music and art. He is working closely with Keith Reilly of Fabric, curating live music and art installations and has also just been commissioned by the Milan planetarium with another four musicians to compose a musical back drop to a space show to be performed live in 2011. As well as still DJing regularly in clubs around the world, Howie recently debuted his new Live show at Fabric, a fully improvised, hardware only, dark dancefloor set that will be followed by a full Live tour in 2011. His new album, 'Good Morning Scalene' is a collection of twelve new pieces of music from Howie, produced and recorded in Italy, China and London and will be released in March 2011.

France's most wanted radio host and selector, Ivan Smagghe stands at the crossroads between glamorous parisian hype and musical integrity. His genre defying/defining production work originally in Black Strobe and now in It’s A Fine Line (who have recently finished Battant's second LP, As I Ride with No Horse) has connected him to and garnered the praise of (amongst others) James Murphy, Trevor Jackson, Ata, Optimo and the aforementioned Weatherall. All fellow crusaders in the fight to prove that electronic music can be so much more than a one dimensional soundtrack for a night on the lash. The success of his musical blog 'a few things from Ivan Smagghe' has generated a compilation series of edits for Paris uber-fashion store Colette. The first volume sold out in a couple of weeks. His project with Tim Paris, It's A Fine Line, has already put out numerous remixes (from Superpitcher to the XX) and releases that can't be pigeonholed (electro rockabilly on Kompakt to italo rickety disco on Marketing Music). Their new studio is now fully set for original music, remixes and production. Expect a lot more from them in 2012. Aside from his A&R role for now 10 years old label Kill The DJ (who have released the first EP of RMVN, Ivan’s project with Roman Flugel), Ivan has also started solo work (a noted remix for Parisian label Meant) as well as more planned collaborations with musical friends (Ewan Pearson and Tiga being first on the list). • Jake Mehew

̸BIOGRAPHY Jake Mehew is a composer, performer, producer, DJ and radio presenter, based in Leeds UK. Jake's work combines principles of free improvisation, with the technological considerations of the avant-garde. Jake uses a combination of acoustic instruments, modular synthesisers and samplers to create rich, meditative soundscapes that envelope the audience within an immersive quadraphonic sound field. Having spent years studying the causation of flow, Jake endeavours to create the conditions for spontaneous and radical composition in his live work, seemingly conjuring whole universes of sound from a self-induced act of trance. This process imbues Jake's live music with a certain sense of danger, as if everything could go wrong at any given moment. In establishing himself as a solo artist in 2020, Jake has completely re-established his performative practice. With support from Sage Gateshead, Jake has built a modular synthesiser, capable of generative improvisation, quadraphonic sound dispersion, and real-time sampling; all of these elements are arranged around his practice of keyboard free improvisation, using a Fender Rhodes to contextualise the choices of the computer. On the 9th September 2022, Jake released his debut LP Sage with ATA Records. In August 2020, Jake was awarded an opportunity to take part in the Sage Gateshead Summer Artist Residency programme. During an intense week of hermit-life in his studio, Jake worked for 80 hours to write, arrange, engineer and produce this monumental 55 minute record which had no pre-conception prior to the residency. This record is full of solos, and features collaborations between notable Leeds based improvisers DJ NikNak, Joel Stedman and Joe Love of Ancient Infinity Orchestra, Chris Duffin of Virginia Wing / Beautiful Lunches, and Jay Taylor. Jake has supported artists such as Suzanne Ciani, The Comet is Coming, Sunda Arc, Soccer 96, Arooj Aftab, Matthew Halsall, Mdou Moctar, Roy Ayers and Mabe Fratti. He has performed at Gilles Peterson's We Out Here Festival, exhibited work for the Leeds International Piano Festival 2021 and has submitted digital work which was broadcast as part of an international programme for Nils Frahm's Piano Day 2021. Jake has recently installed a performance for grand piano, modular synthesiser and quadraphonic speaker array at the International Festival of Ideas 2022 (Howard Assembly Rooms, Leeds, UK). As someone who finds inspiration in technology and innovation, Jake has found opportunities to collaborate with musical brands such as Rhodes®, and Audio Technica. Jake was commissioned to showcase the new Rhodes® MK8 piano at Superbooth Berlin 2022, and demonstrate his unique approach to interfacing a Rhodes® through his modular system. Jake’s collaboration with Audio Technica involved manipulating field recordings captured with AT microphones, and creating an improvised performance with Henry Weekes at the Analogue Foundation Studios in Berlin. The collaboration with Audio Technica was in celebration of their 60th birthday. Jake has been awarded a residency with Britten Pears Arts, to workshop a new audio/visual performance, and is receiving mentorship from the Help Musicians Co-Pilot scheme to further develop the integration of technology within his performative pieces. ̸SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY Sage / Jake Mehew (ATA027) Ambient Modular Library Vol. 1 / Jake Mehew (MSRCA001) Ambient Modular Library Vol. 2 (Feat. A highly respected DJ/producer that pioneered a new genre of house music, Jamie has a dedicated fanbase, hard-working ethos, and a solid team behind him that's been there since the beginning; with such a striking presence in the house and techno scene for the last decade, his entry into the Top 100 DJs poll is long overdue. Next year the Paradise Ibiza residency will launch in Amnesia for the first time, with a new theme — ‘An Age Of Love’. The terrace is a dancefloor that holds many nostalgic memories for Jamie, and we’re sure there will be many more moments to come following his legacy at DC-10. ~ DJMag

Wynters was first known as a garage MC in Birmingham, before rising to prominence in the city’s underground radio and club scene, where he showcased an impressive.. It was in 2015 that Wynters began to really stand out from the rest, with a particular techno legend taking notice. None other than Mr G had found himself a protégé and announced he was signing Wynters to his own label Phoenix G. Mr G’s first release of 2016 was Wynters EP 'Unfamiliar Territories', a 4 track record that is hazy, technoid and threads into deep territories. This is also only the second time Phoenix G has released a record that isn’t from the label founder himself. Understandably, it has taken something rather special for this exception to occur. Wynters music exemplifies his perspective, and therefore his collection of life experiences—the ups, the downs, good times and not-so-good times. Using music as an outlet for expression, whether in the form of DJing or having fun on some drum machines and synths, is one of the most defining features to Wynters. He continues to fuel his passion by keeping an eye on the future rather than the past and striving to remain different.

Born in Tokyo in 1989, Junki Inoue is one of the youngest of the new crop of ‘digger’ DJs, who are gradually making their names through sharing their personal interpretations of the history of electronic dance music. A dedicated collector of vinyl for many years, Junki is comfortable playing sets at any time of the night and in any location: warm up, peak, closing, after-hours; warehouse or open air. Inoue’s sound stands out for its natural combination of Japanese and European traditions: precise, spare and elegant but warm and welcoming; deep and hypnotic for the mind, but always with energy and drive for the body. Inoue caught the music bug young and was a keen collector and DJ of various styles of rock as a teenager. However, his induction to underground electronic music came at scene-legends (and now Berlin ex-pats) Yuki Masda and Yone-Ko’s Cabaret nights at Unit, Tokyo. There he was introduced to some of the genuine masters of stylish, understated and elegant techno and house DJing: Fumiya Tanaka, Daniel Bell, Jan Krueger and Zip. All remain key influences to this day. Inspired by this approach, at the age of 20 Inoue established his own party, Heike at Tokyo clubbing institution Womb. A desire to fully experience different cultures brought Junki to London in 2012. There, Inoue met the Toi Toi Musik crew, with whom a mutual understanding and respect was rapidly developed. He has been resident DJ at the party for the past two years. London has proven itself to be Inoue's spiritual and cultural home, with the city providing more freedom to express himself as an individual than can easily be found at home in Japan. Rave came alive to Junki in London, where he witnessed a new wave of artists and DJing forming firsthand: DJs like Nicolas Lutz, Andrew James Gustav and Gwenan showed that the elegant grooves that had caught Inoue’s attention back in Tokyo could be created from a broader musical palette, with fewer formal rules. Junki is now well on his way to establishing his name alongside his inspirations, with regular gigs alongside these DJs. The past year has seen him play sets in major cities and at major clubs across the world: CONCRETE in Paris, Phonoteque in Montevideo (where he was selected to open the 2017 season), regular spots in Zurich, gigs throughout Italy (Milan, Venice, Rome). Much more is sure to lie ahead for this positive and unassuming talent.

̸BIOGRAPHY The term legend is often banded about far too easily, but in this case it is entirely accurate! Justin Robertson is a producer and dj, who brings with him a rich history as one of the creators of the Electronic Music scene, as well as a restless need t.. JUSTIN ROBERTSON BIOGRAPHY NOVEMBER 2013 It's hard to find a succinct way to describe a man with over 23 years experience as an innovator and restless proponent of fascinating forward thinking music, lets use Legend, its sometimes over used, sometimes misplaced, but in this case its entirely accurate. His rich history is matched only by his tireless need to keep pushing forward, as a result he remains one of the most relevant and exciting Dj/Producers around, as a whole new generation of electronic enthusiasts will sweatily testify. Justin's latest incarnation as The Deadstock 33s has been garnishing lavish praise from established figures such as Andrew Weatherall and Erol Alkan, as well as a diverse cross section of fresh talent from Daniel Avery [ with whom he has a long standing production partnership] to Eats Everything. With one album released to widespread critical acclaim, and a new collection nearing completion, several eps,for the likes of Gomma, Optimo Music, Tiger Sushi, Southern Fried, Batty Bass and Join Our Club and with a raft of top notch remixes for the likes of Paul Weller, Erol Alkan and Boys Noize, Asphodells, Justice, Steve Mason, and 2 Bears, Justin shows no sign of slowing down creatively. Justin began his journey as a student in Manchester, attracted by the flourishing musical heritage of the town, he soon fell in love with the emerging alien machine funk that would become the Acid House scene. Working at the legendary Eastern Bloc records it wasn't long before began to make his mark as a dj Creating and curating two of the uk's seminal Balearic House clubs in Spice [with Greg Fenton] and Most Excellent, where the young Chemical Brothers found inspiration. Through out the nineties Justin was consistently found at the cutting edge of club land whether it be in his own genre crunching Rebellious Jukebox [ the blueprint for eclectic clubs like the Heavenly Social] , the sweaty Techno and electronica mecca that was Sleuth, or providing the underground alternative at Cream, Justin became the bye word for uncompromising Jacking , but with a party guaranteed . The early 1990's also saw Justin begin a fruitful remixing career starting with local band Mad Jacks, Moving swiftly on to re work, Erasure, Bjork, Happy Mondays, New Order, Talk Talk, Stereo mc s, Gary Clail, Fini Tribe, Felix the Housecat and Chicken lips to name but a few in a terrifyingly huge catalogue . Inevitably His own productions soon took centre stage, scoring several top 40's and an appearance on Top of The Pops with his Genre defying Lionrock. Touring with the likes of The Chemical Brothers, the Cocteau Twins and Death In Vegas, Lionrock became one of the bands that defined the growing confidence of dance music and its potential to flourish and mutate into so many fascinating hybrids, Producing some of dance musics most famous tracks along the way , songs like Packet of Peace, Rude Boy Rock and Carnival appearing in almost any list of stone cold classics worth their salt. As the new Millennium dawned Robertson moved on ,releasing several singles for Bugged Out, with whom he has had a long and fruitful relationship. In 2001 Robertson conjured up and another genre defining release with his Revtone project, the eponymous album becoming something of a cult hit, bringing primitive house and No Wave Disco into the digital age. The seminal track Love Movement was reworked to devastating effect by Ulrich Schnauss, who has often cited Justin's work as an influence, anchoring itself to almost every top 10 end of year chart in 2003. Justin also found time to produce the achingly beautiful ''Yes It Is'' with Tim Burgess, record reggae in Jamaica with Ernest Ranglin and Nadine Sutherland, front the art rock combo Thee Earls, write songs for two Fatboy Slim albums and run his own Neverwork label releasing several singles that found favour with everyone from Ellen Alien to Paul Woolford, before embarking on the latest sonic adventure that was to be The Deadstock 33s. The Deadstock 33s has certainly seen Justin's stock rise in the last few years, from killer headline sets at Bestival, Unknown, Festival No 6, and Electric Elephant to acclaimed sessions from the Warehouse Project in Manchester to Crobar in Argentina, Justin continues to enthral , painting from a rich psychedelic pallet, taking in everything from Wigged out Disco to stripped down visceral Acid House. Justin Robertson still as sharp as his rakishly appointed hat . ̸SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY Discogs: Justin Robertson

  • Lena Willikens

Amsterdam based DJ and Producer Lena Willikens. Resident at Salon Des Amateurs, Düsseldorf. Artist on Dekmantel Rec. Radio broadcaster of "Lightning Conductor" on NTS Radio. Lena Willikens doesn’t play the hits. When she’s behind the decks, even her biggest fans often have no idea exactly what she’s playing, and that’s part of the magic. Like all DJs, Willikens of course has a passion for records and is always on the hunt for elusive bits of music, but as an artist, her work doesn’t hinge on any one track or even a handful of tracks. She’s after something bigger, something that’s truly transportive for those on the dancefloor, and the tracks she plays – whether they’re bizarre slices of synth exploration, some ominously churning proto-industrial stomp, or something else that simply defies classification – are all parts of a larger, more psychically satisfying whole. These days, however, Willikens' radio adventures happen on NTS, where she pilots the monthly Lightning Conductor program. Now based in Amsterdam, her curatory prowess prompted an invite from Dekmantel to put together the fifth installment of their acclaimed Selectors compilation series, and she also contributed a track to the label’s run of all-star 10th anniversary EPs. As a remixer, she's been tapped in recent years to rework the likes of Lena Platonos, rRoxymore, S U R V I V E, Simian Mobile Disco, and Ana Helder, amongst others. And amidst all this activity, she's also been busy with Phantom Kino Ballett, a collaboration with artist Sarah Szczesny that lands somewhere between immersive audio-visual experience and performance art, allowing Willikens to indulge her transportive impulses in a completely new way. Nevertheless, it’s in the DJ booth where Willikens continues to make the biggest impact. As of late, she’s forged a particularly potent partnership with fellow sonic explorer and Salon des Amateurs alum Vladimir Ivkovic, the two engaging in a sort of mind meld that brings together their shared love of electronic music’s darkest and most bizarre corners. • Mark Seven

̸BIOGRAPHY Mark Seven / DJ Parkway / Parkwest / World Building "Inviting Mark to play in Berlin for the first time, probably 8 years ago or so… I still remember so vividly how it was a turning point in my life as a DJ and dancer. I got a glimpse into what was possible when passion and knowledge would be such strong forces, that a room becomes one because of both shared energy and musical excitement. I remember so many records he played that night (lots of them became entry points for me for lots of further discoveries and stayed with me as reference points, both musically and contextually, in the sense that I always remembered the way he played them)" - Hunee The disco and house landscape would be very different today if it weren’t for DJ, producer and record dealer Mark Seven. Weren’t aware? That’s OK. Mark is very good at downplaying his salience. Originally from the UK, Mark Seven now bases himself out of Stockholm where he runs the labels Parkway and Parkwest and the online record store Juswax. He travels regularly collecting vinyl and bringing his music to the world’s most discerning dancefloors. Mark Seven’s particular fascination is with the very early house records when flamboyant disco was first emulated with drum machines and other newly available technologies - the dawn of Chicago house and arguably dance music as we now know it. His sets take in proto house, italo, street soul and early garage, and move into soulful, electronic disco and banging house with a finesse that only comes with decades of dedication. Hunee recalls his first time seeing Mark fluidly traversing these styles, as “a turning point in my life as a DJ and dancer”. Mark started the label Parkway in 2010 to highlight the more soulful side of the disco and proto house spectrum, and later followed with Parkwest, which deals in punchier club tracks. His Parkway Mastermixes, a series of online mixes which collate many of Parkway’s releases and other pivotal gems, have been praised by the likes of Gerd Janson, Todd Terje and Prins Thomas amongst others. In recent years many of Mark’s own productions have been turning up in some very reputable hands. In her RA podcast, Eris Drew went old school Mark, weaving the track Sensory Delight, released under the moniker Bizarre Tracks, into her mix. Jamie Tiller selected a cut by Trey Risqué (another Mark Seven pseudonym) feat Nikki - A Night with the Boys for his Dekmantel podcast. Tim Sweeney and CC:DISCO dazzled our eardrums with Parkway Rhythm (whaddayaknow, Mark again) - Working Girl on numerable mixtapes and radio shows. Those are likely not the only tracks Mark has produced which you’ve inadvertently danced to of late. That one The Boss edit? Mark’s. The late legend Boyd Jarvis’ last release? Mark’s. Records by Librah, Apartment 4/4, Azura, MK VII, Spira? All Mark. Hunee was not exaggerating when he called this man an “unsung hero”. Whilst Mark has a slew of heavy hitters dating back decades, his most important tracks are always his most recent. Ari Goldman of the Beautiful Swimmers was so taken by Mark’s track ‘The Fatal Flaw in Disco’, that in 2016 he decided to kickstart his new label World Building by releasing it. The track was championed by Pender Street Steppers, Jen Ferrer, Bradley Zero, Hessle Audio. For many, it became the anthem of the summer. Mark Seven steers clear of the social media rigmarole, quietly going about his business charting musical territory that may otherwise have been forgotten. His record store, Juswax, can’t be found on social media and eschews express checkouts in favor of direct contact with buyers. He’s even been known to send personal typewritten letters along with certain deliveries. There aren’t many out there whose fire burns this bright after 30 years in the game, even fewer who have put the music before themselves throughout as Mark Seven has. Every time he gets behind the decks, it’s something genuinely special. ̸ BIOGRAPHY Laura’s musical journey as a DJ has only just begun in earnest. This talented young artist born in Lithuania and now residing in one of London’s most creative musical hubs has gone on to immerse herself in a lifestyle that only serves to amplify her hunger to absorb and learn her craft. Laura possesses a natural ear for sound and sublime technical skills. Her style is one that can’t be pigeonholed, or genre listed. Mature beyond her young years in her style and manipulation of sounds through her music selection this young DJ has already began to turn heads and ears in the DJ fraternity of not only local heroes but also her internationally established peers. Like Laura herself, her younger years were very humble, but the signs were very clear from the start with her passion for expression being at the forefront of all she did, whether that be through gymnastics from the age of 7, to taking up playing brass instruments, singing in the local choir and even participating in her hometown folklore group. Sound and Motion have been most prevalent in this artist’s early development and in her last few years in Lithuania included her being part of a choreographic theatre project was the music varied from classical and Jazz to contemporary, experimental and modern. Upon completion of her education in Lithuania Laura decided that she would come to London to gain further qualifications in her chosen field, but the enchantment of the London music scene and nightlife mesmerised her. “I was fascinated by the DJs abilities to unify the dance floor and make people forget about everything else outside venue the venue doors and keep the attention of the crowd’. From those moments Laura consciously decided that she wanted to learn how to work that magic captivating and connecting with her audience. • MIDLAND

̸BIOGRAPHY Midland is a DJ, Producer and Record label owner from London. Through his productions, DJ sets and record labels, Midland's output comes across as unassuming and surprising in equal measure, at once subtle, refined and totally raucous. As a Producer Midland’s style has nimbly evolved from one record to the next. From his debut release with Pearson Sound (aka Ramadanman) “Your Words Matter” via “Trace” to his most recent EP “The Alchemy of Circumstance” he has explored a vast range of styles whilst managing to keep a core sound that is truly his own. In 2013 he started his label “Graded" to focus on releasing his own music, “Archive 01”, “Drumtrak” and “Blush” all followed. This was followed by the arrival of another label, ReGraded, in which he explored the art of sampling with “Double Feature” and culminating with the release of “Final Credits” a sleeper hit that went on to be voted Mixmags song of the year in 2016. His label InterGraded was launched in 2018 focussed on releasing music by new or emerging artists. He has remixed, amongst others, Dua Lipa, The Chemical Brothers, St Vincent and Darkstar. He helped with production on Jessie Wares “Save A Kiss” alongside James Ford. It is arguable however that he has made his biggest impact with the other side of his craft: DJing. Delivering his kaleidoscopic taste with a mixing technique that nods as much to his British lineage as it does to a smoother European style, he has distinguished himself with an ability to switch styles in a way that always feels totally natural. From the carpeted dance floors at Free Rotation, via regular slots at Berlin’s “Berghain” and “Panorama Bar”, Offenbachs’ “Robert Johnson”, Glastonbury’s “NYC Downlow”, San Francisco’s “Honey Soundsystem”, London’s “Fabric”, “Horse Meat Disco” and "Chapter 10" or any of his “All Night Long” sets at “Phonox” he is able to play in a way that shows a deep understanding of the space and what is needed to bring it alive. In the words of Resident Advisor “there’s a perfect record for every moment, and he usually has it”. His recorded mixes have become word of mouth favourites and in 2016 he won “Essential Mix of the Year” for his entry into the series. In 2017 he recorded “Fabriclive94”, described by Pitchfork as “one of the year's best” and earned compilation of the year from Mixmag who featured him as their first cover of 2018. Fact Magazine said of the mix "Quietly, and without much fanfare, Midland has grown into one of the world’s best DJs. Fabriclive 94 is a testament to what makes him so great”. The only takeaway from these accolades is that Midland is a man still very much exploring and honing his craft and one of the key reasons that his ascent has never felt forced or manufactured. ̸SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY http://www.discogs.com/artist/1202712-Midland

̸BIOGRAPHY Moxie has forged a career that has taken her all over the world to some of the most renowned clubs including Fabric, De School, Concrete and the energy dome of Berghain’s Panorama Bar.... As a radio DJ who started out covering for Sinden’s Kiss FM show in 2010, Moxie has gone on to hold down The Residency and INDJ’s We Trust slots on BBC Radio 1 and continues to have one of the longest standing residencies on NTS. Her weekly show is a staple for the latest in underground house, techno and beyond, peppered with her engaging and charismatic radio chat - hosting guests from some of dance music’s leading artistic forces including Jeff Mills, Midland, Four Tet, Honey Dijon and more. This lead to her being featured in Time Out’s article of London’s 10 best radio shows, and a main focus in Mixmag’s piece about the Rise of The Selector. She’s also provided online mixes for some of the best series around – with Essential Mix, Resident Advisor, Truants, FACT, Solid Steel, and Triple J to name but a few. Alongside her illustrious radio and DJ career, Moxie has established herself as a promoter and label founder with On Loop. Started in 2016, the party has rapidly gained momentum, welcoming artists such as Matthew Herbert, Josey Rebelle, Leon Vynehall, K-Hand and Joy Orbison, in venues across Europe and the UK. The accompanying label has just released it’s fifth compilation, having previously released music from Shanti Celeste, Lone, Nabihah Iqbal, Lady Blacktronika, and Violet. On Loop was championed as one of Mixmag’s Top 20 labels of 2017, and nominated for ‘Best Compilation’ at the DJ Mag awards. With a touring schedule ever growing at a rapid pace, Moxie continues to take her unique culmination of expertise to clubs and spaces around the globe – seamlessly fusing anything from classic Chicago house to obscure leftfield breaks, or glittering disco with energetic percussive rollers, entertaining and educating club goers wherever the journey takes her.

  • Nick The Record

̸BIOGRAPHY Nick has been quietly involved in the scene for the past 25 years, DJing, releasing the occasional record and selling rare Disco & Soul records to the stars. Nick has been getting more recognition of late thanks to his Boilerroom set for The Final Night in Paradise party at Village Underground which was part of a tribute night to Larry Levan & The Paradise Garage. Nick also got a lot of attention paying respect to another legend Arthur Russell with his mix for RA consisting solely of Arthur’s music, including many unreleased tunes. Nick has spent much of his DJ career in Japan but in more recent years he has been sharing his music closer to home. He’s played at some of the best festivals in Europe over the last few summers with sets at Kala, Love International, Meadows In The Mountains, Dekmantel Selectors, Houghton & Southern Soul. In London he’s playing a monthly residency at Jazz Cafe & gets plenty of guest spots around town. He’s also played in Berlin, France, Belgium, Norway & Portugal this year. He’s also been running a regular party in London called Tangent with John Gomez which is one of London’s hidden gems in which the two selectors dig deep into their record collections to play everything from Afro Disco and sun-kissed tropical rarities to Soul & electronic gems. The emphasis is on a great sound. The party has been going more than 4 years now with and with a move to The Pickle Factory in Summer 2018 it is going from strength to strength. Nick currently runs a label called Record Mission with Dan Tyler from The Idjut Boys to release their Edits. The pair also scored a underground hits with a reworks of Boyd Jarvis – The Music Got Me for Ransom Note label & Robot Jam for the Emotional Rescue label. Other releases include a compilation for Dave Lee’s Z label entitled Under the Influence. Prior to that he curated 2 volumes of Disco Juice for Counterpoint records and has also released original material on Nuphonic, Ene & 20/20 Vision labels. Nick has also released 2 official mix CD’s in Japan on Lastrum & Avex (Japan’s biggest record label). In 2018 Nick has released remixes which have been well received by the DJ community. In February there was his remix of Andromeda Orchestra for Faze Action Records which has turned into a bit of a modern disco classic. In the summer he was charged with remixing a track from the new lp of Nigerian legend Ebo Taylor. Which he turned into an Afro House burner. Nick got his first taste of London nightlife going to Hip Hop Jams in the eighties & then onto the Rare Groove scene & was around for the summer of love in 1988 when House exploded in the South. In the early 90’s Nick started to play at lots of underground parties in the thriving warehouse party scene in London and also during the summer at many outside “Free Parties” and music festivals as well as guesting at DJ Harvey’s legendary MOIST club and being one of the resident DJs at QUIRKY at the Vox. In ‘93 Nick’s love affair with Japan started when he got together with a crew of Japanese friends and formed Lifeforce. These legendary parties were ground breaking in Japan. There was already a great club scene bringing famous US DJ’s over but Lifeforce was something different. With a close knit crowd drawn by word of mouth, elements of the UK’s “free party” movement and a Soundtrack spanning from Garage to Disco to Detroit Techno & Chicago Acid they took Japanese nightlife from “Clubbing” to “Partying” with Nick as the resident DJ visiting 3 or 4 times a year for 20 years. He’s been so many times he’s lost count. Nick has played all over Japan in the last 15 years & has been resident DJ at Taico club open air festival for 13 years where he plays the closing set of the festival in the idyllic setting of the Nagano Mountains. Alongside such artists as Madlib, Rhythm & Sound, Daedelus, Chateau Flight, Rob Da Bank, Moodman, Rub-N-Tug, Ulrich Schnauss, Pepe Bradock, Chez Damier, James Holden, Osunlade, DJ Koze, James Holden, Ricardo Villalobos. This has become one of the highlights of Nick’s year. It is one of Japan’s best underground music festivals and is held in a place named Kodamanomori which apparently translates as echo forest – it is in a valley surrounded by trees which acts as a natural amphitheatre & sounds incredible. Nick gets to play what is known as the ‘After Hours’ or closing set from 8am to 2pm after the second stage has closed – he is the only man they trust with this job. Nick was offered a prestigious weekly residency in one of London’s best clubs but after much thought he decided to turn it down as he enjoys travelling and playing to new crowds and meeting music lovers around the world… so book him now while you still can. ̸SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY Releases: Record Mission Z Records Lastrum & Avex Counterpoint Nuphonic Emotional Rescue

  • Nicolas Lutz

“Nicolas lutz has been influenced by his father's record collection”....Errr., NOT.. As much as I wouldn't like to discard one's childhood influences to forming one's artistic make up (that is not Nico's case anyway, hehe) I would still prefer to focus on other aspects which are equally, if not more important when talking about this specific artist. What that artist name (and real name) entails is a very deep trip into an extremely creative mind, a very interesting one. The main and very special aspect of what makes Nicolas Lutz him artistically is the ethos in how he stands by his music, his vision. Nicolas' medium of choice is vinyl and the cultural tradition it brings with it. In such a digital age the tendency from the general public to think that Djs that only use vinyl are ‘dinosaurs’or ‘behind’ or ‘limited’ is apparent and the beauty about Nicolas is that he proves them wrong leaving them wondering what has hit them on a dance floor. Here is where the most special thing that makes up...

  • Not An Animal

̸BIOGRAPHY Not An Animal is a label born from the party debris left uncleaned from London’s infamous Bad Passion parties, as ran by Chris Stoker and Andy Bainbridge who's side projects include Machete Savane, Ess O Ess & Latrec . As Chris and Andy’s energy was being devoted more and more to their musical endeavours (Chris - Ess O Ess with Jamie Blanco / Andy - Machete Savane with Saul Richards & more recently Latrec with Ali Colling) it became both a logical and inevitable step that they would eventually see the birth of their own record label, to showcase not only their own music but also that of the friends that they’ve made in over a decade of throwing and attending parties in various guises. It’s this collective nature which means that Not An Animal cannot be pinned down to one single sound, genre or style. The music is instead linked by a commonality of taste and approach from all of the artists involved. While you can draw some slight comparisons with the contributors (which include the aforementioned Ess O Ess and Machete Savane, as well as Man Power, Lauer, Roman Flugel, Chida, Suzanne Kraft, The Backwoods, Kuniyuki, Frank Butters, Justin Van Der Volgen, Discodromo, Tiago & Angophora ) it would be impossible to say that anything truly unites them further than an open aesthetic which is receptive to sounds as various as Techno, Disco, Rock, Balearica and good old fashioned House, and which doesn’t try to draw any distinction between any of them.

̸BIOGRAPHY Obergman Electronics Hailing from Stockholm, music maker since the late 90’s — with the first official release on the legendary ‘Skam Records’ imprint of Manchester in 2001, strongly associated with Gescom\Autechre. Eventually, the current moniker Obergman emerged on genre-essential labels like ‘Stilleben Records’ and ‘Abstract Forms’ — marking the direction towards a more purified sound, seizing the attention of a new label on the rise; ‘Brokntoys’ launching the ‘Quantum Eraser’ EP and the latter ‘Nocturnal Detour’ with selections of more neurotic excursions in somewhat bleaker colors. The first official full length album ‘Universal Hologram’ was released on ‘BÖRFT Records’, offering a wider palette of dreamy electro and 4/4 tracks fueled by the TB-303. The highly acclaimed UK label ‘Furthur Electronix’ dives deeper into the acidic bubblebath on the 2×12" album ‘Angular Momentum’ — whilst another 2-part album project called ‘Curvature of Time’ (Pt.1) cultivates the vein of more distilled electro, for ‘Between Places/SolarOne’ (DE). The following album release on ultra quality ‘Pariter Records’ renders a TR-808 driven techno hybrid, based on a broth of classic electro. Furthermore, a continuous string of releases for some of the most cherished labels within the associated genres has been launched and continues to do so, on a steady pace. ̸SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY Obergman — 12" EPs and albums _________________________________________________ ‘Invariant Hyperbola’ • 12" EP • Infiltrate\Constant Sound, UK ‘Mirror Counterpart’ • 2×12" • Pariter Records, DE ‘Centre of Mass’ • Limted 12" • Pariter Records, DE ‘Nocturnal Detour’ • 12" • Brokntoys, UK ‘Akrobahn’ • 12" • Stilleben Records, SE/NL ‘Curvature of Time’ Pt. 1 • 12" • Between Places, DE [Solar One] ‘Spectral Radiosity • 12" • Shakesphere, UK [Furthur Electronix] ‘Angular Momentum’ • 2×12" / album • Furthur Electronix, UK ‘Pyroclastic Flow’ • 12" • Stilleben Records, SE/NL ‘Code Two’ • Ekman/Obergman • split 12" ‘Continuum Slice’ • 12" album • Fundamental, ES [FR.EE] ‘Holographic Universe’ • 12" album, Börft Rec. • Ouissam

It would be wrong to start talking about where Ouissam comes from – after a decade in Asia, he’s now something of a regional entity that has managed to change the dance music scene wherever he has laid down roots. His approach to a dance floor is as simple as it is intuitive and elegant: nothing that can make a room shudder with joy is barred from his selections. As the founder of Hong Kong’s Cliche Records, he was one of the first in that city to cultivate a disco-house-techno synthesis that shifted the understanding of what could be danced to there. He went on to create the magnetic Homesick and Fragrant Harbour labels, before suddenly setting his sights on Hanoi in Vietnam, where he has established the dance mecca Savage where he runs the monthly queer night Snug. And on top of all that, he found time to curate the coveted Equation festival, now entering its second year..

As one third of the team behind the Hessle Audio label, David Kennedy a.k.a. Pearson Sound has become more than synonymous with the cutting edge of UK dancefloor music. In releasing his self-titled debut artist album in 2015, he skilfully capitalised on his astoundingly solid run of single and EP releases since 2009, producing a hypnotically enveloping LP that really found its feet in its willingness to experiment. Since then, he has been focused on the club, with his recent single XLB being voted the #2 best track of 2016 by Resident Advisor, as well as Freeze & Thaw Cycle being a staple of some of the biggest house and techno DJs' record bags. He has lectured at the Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid, released a critically heralded FABRICLIVE compilation and has remixed artists like Radiohead, The xx and M.I.A. as well as running the vinyl only club night, Acetate, in Leeds.

̸BIOGRAPHY Bristol based visionary behind both Livity Sound and Punch Drunk records who has spent over two decades at the cutting edge of UK underground dance music. Peverelist’s sharp, ear-catching style as a DJ and producer has placed him at the vanguard of forward-thinking club music. His unique take on the soundsystem tradition draws on techno, jungle, dub, grime and garage in pursuit of a sound that’s uplifting and innovative. From his early releases and first label Punch Drunk through to the establishment of Livity Sound in 2011, Pev’s helped represent Bristol’s ever-evolving independent electronic music scene internationally. More than a decade in, Livity Sound now stands as one of the key global benchmarks for a hybridised dance music which draws on inventive approaches to rhythm and melody. Through successive albums and EPs Pev’s developed a singular production style which balances delicacy and spaciousness with maximum presence, while his DJing teases the edge between horizon-expanding new music and a keen instinct for what makes people move. If there is such a thing as a ‘Livity’ sound, it stems from this artistic approach. Unbound by genre, exploring percussive patterns and holding true to the fundamental principles of great soundsystem music, Pev’s trajectory continues to bring us untold surprises from the cutting edge.

  • Powder

Some artists fully deserve their hype and Powder is definitely one of them. Momoko "Moko" Goto, better known in the DJ world as Powder, has successfully taken her neon charged creations out of the Tokyo underground and into the discerning worldwide house & techno public. After her debut on Lovefingers’ ESP Institute, Powder’s cosmic rhythms found a home on Samo DJ’s Born Free & Discodromo’s CockTail d’Amore Music, pushing her tribal-inspired, hypnotic sound further into a surreal house, techno and psychedelic disco territory. She recently ushered in a brand new mix series for Beats in Space, a further testament to her DJ skills and sensibilities. Beyond her work as a music creator, Powder’s DJing backs up her production style with many influences. As a selector, she has notably eclectic tastes, which run the gamut from house to no wave to Japanese synthpop, utilizing extended loops and subtle blends to create a genre-defying, transcendent experience.

  • Prosumer

̸BIOGRAPHY Achim Brandenburg aka Prosumer comes from Saarbruecken, used to live in Berlin and now is based in Edinburgh. He loves house music, produces a record from time to time and likes to share the music he loves. „The craze about the music...“ ...the man called Prosumer is besotted with it. Since Achim Brandenburg heartily grabbed the microphone under this moniker in 2005 for Frankfurt’s then undisputed Label Playhouse, he showed that lasciviousness, a fever for Chicago’s Jack flavour and consciousness of tradition aren’t necessarily bound to a time and a place. Vision, passion and knowledge make Prosumer a guardian of house music history and one of the formative artists, influential DJs and important producers of our days. While deriving his name from Alvin Toffler’s techno sci-fi-bible The Third Wave (producing and consuming at the same time), Prosumer lives up to his name. With more than a decade of Hard-Wax-Record-Store-enculturation on the clock (first in Saarbrucken, then Berlin), he spent countless nights in clubs, days looking for music and years refining his art and becoming in line with the “big three”. This is not a reference to Detroit’s car companies, but the city’s musical heritage that – together with the Big Apple and the Windy city – laid the foundation for techno and house builds with the Big Apple and the Windy City. Prosumer oscillates between these poles. That holds true for his productions, which are affected by references and historical vertexes, but never feel to be out of time or place. An album with Murat Tepeli and collaborations with Tama Sumo expand his discography for labels like the aforementioned Playhouse, Running Back or Swayzak’s 240 Volts. On the other hand – and that might be far more important – this is exemplary for his DJ work since the mid-nineties. Prosumer connects the tracks and songs of this music’s golden age with the worthwhile pieces and developments of today. Accordingly to that special feeling which is so hard to couch, he gets engaged in it from tip to toe – and so does his audience. Proved by his mission as one of the residents in Berlin’s influential club institution, on his official mix CD for that place that describes his spectrum of sound perfectly and by this certain magic that travels with and in him everywhere. „Through his body and through his veins...“ ̸SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY Prosumer - Newborn - 240 Volt Prosumer - The Craze - Playhouse Murat Tepeli feat. • Ralph Lawson

̸BIOGRAPHY DJ/ Producer Founder - 20/20 Vision Recordings director - inner city recordings Ralph Lawson is best known for his highly acclaimed 20/20 Vision record label and productions. Alongside 20/20 Vision he was a co-founding resident DJ at the legendary back to basics club in Leeds, where he played the very first record in November 1991. Lawson has helped the club win 5 major industry awards so far (DMC, Muzik, DJ Magazine) for Best Club and been personally nominated for Best Breakthrough, Best DJ and Lifetime contribution by DJ Magazine. Lawson learnt his trade as a true resident DJ, playing every week at back to basics. He became musical director at the club bringing many of the most important electronic music artists in the world to Leeds for the first time. These included Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx, Danny Tenaglia, Francois Kervorkian, Derrick Carter, Derrick May, DJ Harvey, Chez Damier & Ron Trent, Stacey Pullen and many others. Playing long sets alongside the greats helped Lawson learn and develop his own DJ skills. Ralph’s reputation spread from his Basics residency with guest appearances at the legendary Hacienda, Sub Club, Flying, Full Circle, Venus and Shindig as well as early excursions around Europe. Ralph become one of the first UK DJs with a residency in Barcelona at The Moog club and began playing in Ibiza at Ku, Space and Amnesia from the mid nineties. Alongside long-term production partner Carl Finlow, the pair produced a series of respected releases including the classic ‘Raptures of The Deep’. 20/20 productions forged ahead with notable remixes for David Bowie, Arthur Baker, Josh Wink, Felix Da Housecat. They also started a long running series of remixes for Blaze, most notably ‘Lovelee Dae’, ‘Funky People’ and ‘Wishing You Were Here’. Lawson also produced alongside Chez Damier as Chuggles on Prescription Underground and further projects included work for Soma, Pagan and Get Physical. The record label roster grew to include a wealth of international artists including; Maya Jane Coles, Crazy P, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Audiojack and Paul Woolford. In 2003 Lawson started the live electronic band 2020Soundsystem. The band successfully toured the world for the following decade, releasing the albums ‘No Order’ and ‘Falling’ and ‘Live at Sonar’ in the process. 2020Soundsystem became firm festival favourites with appearances at Sonar, Glastonbury, Exit, Lovebox, The Garden Festival, Creamfields, Kendall Calling, Beatherder, Rockness, T in the Park, Camp Bisco and many more. The album was warmly received and Lawson found himself back on major festival stages at Sonar, Love International, Electric Elephant, Hideout, Festival No.6, Eastern Electrics, Gottwood and many others. After playing at Burning Man festival in 2012 he was invited to headline Robot Heart in New York City. The same year Lawson played for the first time at Circo Loco at DC10 in Ibiza and continued the relationship the following year on the terrace. In 2014 the 20th anniversary of 20/20 Vision was celebrated with the album ‘Content’ featuring a DJ Mix including exclusive tracks from Herbert and Maya Jane Coles and series of international tour dates. The next project created was ‘Lost in Time’ featuring a return to collaborating with original production partners Chez Damier, Carl Finlow and Tuccillo. In 2018 Lawson continued his output with a compilation series celebrating 25 years of his residency at back to basics. The ‘rare classics’ compilation featured a selection of hard to find tracks from the club’s history and included artwork from Jamie Reid, the graphic artist who defined the punk era with his album covers for the Sex Pistols. A truly timeless project created by a DJ who has lasted the test of time. Also in 2018 Lawson co-founded inner city electronic festival in Leeds continuing his work as a musical director and curator. The festival has been greeted with universal acclaim and hosted international heavyweight artists including Floating Points, Peggy Gou, Nina Kraviz, Octave One, KiNK, DJ Stingray among many others in it’s opening editions. ̸BIOGRAPHY Performs as DJ since 1993. Residency: Berghain / Panoramabar, Freerotation, Dance Tunnel Label: OstGut Ton. Style: Deep, dry & funky news and classics from House to Techno including Disco, Broken Beat, Afrobeat .... I started out in a bar called Drama in Kreuzberg, which has been an important hang out for the scene and one of the first bars ever to feature its own djs at the weekend. The Drama has been one of the few locations featuring house music, instead of techno dominating all the other clubs and bars at that time. I used to play a lot of soulful vocal house and quickly became a resident at Globus/Tresor, as well as at the gay Saturdays at Café Moskau. „My motivation is and has been a mixture of fun and communication. Verbally as well as non-verbally. I love to create and play with different moods and atmospheres. I’m still fascinated by the fact that music can release a huge amount of energy and how music creates fun, jollying anyone along without any reason or principle. Music and bass in particular can make people happy!“ Since 1997, when I have been a resident at Globus/Tresor, I gradually opened up stylistically and didn’t feel the need anymore to go along the lines of the techno and house division. Since 2001 I regularly played at the gay/lesbian „Dance with the Aliens“ parties at the old OstGut and consequently at the end of 2004 I became a resident at the new Panorama Bar / Berghain. In the meantime I developed a varied style ranging from new and classic House to Techno including a lot of Disco, Afrobeats..... It is fundamental to my work as a DJ that I manage to let the music, the crowd and myself run freely. I have to turn off my head and go with the flow. This always is the challenge and if it works it is big fun. The crowd and i have to get kind of cosy with each other. And if I manage to build my set up and down, to go to lots of different places, it is perfect! ̸SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY - Prosumer & Tama Sumo: Play up / Brothers, Sisters (OstGut Ton 14 / March 2008) - Tama Sumo: Panoramabar # 2 Mix CD (OstGut Ton CD 10 / October /2009) - Tama Sumo & Prosumer: Alien Mutts (Diamonds & Pearls / October 2009) - Prosumer & Tama Sumo: Rarified EP (OstGut Ton 36 / May 2010) - Mount Kimbie: William (Prosumer & Tama Sumo Remix) (Hotflush Recordings / May 2010) - Mary Boyoi: Zooz (Tama Sumo Remix) (Süd Electronic) - The Knife: Ready To Lose (Tarantism Remix) (Rabid Records)

Mei grew up near the vibrant megacity Chengdu in the lush Western China Sichuan Basin. At the age of 9, she began to learn the traditional Chinese Erhu, a genuinely mysterious folk instrument, two-stringed, played with a bow and made from carved wood and snakeskin, sometimes known in the Western world as the Chinese violin or the Chinese two-stringed fiddle. Inspired by her passion for the electronic music scene of Chengdu’s hyped underground, Mei started to fuse traditional Chinese folk music with minimalistic techno tunes.

̸BIOGRAPHY Vera Heindel is a gifted selector with flawless technique. Playing records in the way she does takes skill, yet the casual observer might not realize just how much. It's an ego-free method that puts music above showmanship. (Matt Unicomb/ RA) Veras timeless music selection, a subtle mixing style and her authentic, elegant appearance behind the decks impressed clubbers and promoters all around the globe. Constantly evolving and picking up impulses, she follows her intuition rather then trends and she keeps surprising with unexpected sets. Veras media are her vinyls, that she’s choosing from an extended record collection. For her it’s all about the story a DJ is telling and the ambience being created, not about genres or playing one big tune after the other. Each gig she prepares passionately, imagining and selecting the right music for each place she's visiting. Her roots reach back to the golden age of techno and house- the early 90’s. Two decades of experience behind the decks turned her into a routined DJ, that is booked in numerous places all over the world. • Vladimir Ivkovic

„The challenging sets he delivers are not always easy, but almost always ingenious“ Strange Sounds From Beyond Vladimir Ivkovic is a DJ. He’s more than that of course, but as his essence, Ivkovic is someone with a particularly unique talent for selecting records and weaving them into a larger – and often unusually compelling – narrative. Born and raised in Belgrade, he first dabbled in DJing as a teenager in the mid ’80s, but it was only after leaving Yugoslavia (to study in Germany) and later coming back for a summertime visit that he truly immersed himself in the craft, taking up position behind the decks during a series of impromptu parties at a lakeside restaurant owned by his parents. From there, he spent much of the next two decades honing his skills while throwing events like Selected and Substance that played host to a cross-section of boundary-pushing DJs, long before it was fashionable to do so. Eventually, Ivkovic found his musical and spiritual home at Salon des Amateurs, an unassuming spot in Düsseldorf that’s gradually proven to be wildly influential, giving rise in recent years to otherworldly talents like Lena Willikens, Tolouse Low Trax, Jan Schulte and many others, including Ivkovic himself. With its small size, Salon des Amateurs provided something of an open platform, a place where true music lovers could experience DJs exploring sounds and genres that strayed far from traditional electronic dance music tropes. That same adventurous spirit has found its way into Ivkovic’s curation of Offen Music, a label he launched in 2015. Although the imprint’s output is all but impossible to neatly categorize – experimental Serbian rarities sit alongside ambient excursions and moody synth-pop in the label’s catalogue – the label’s open-minded approach and embrace of off-kilter sounds perfectly encapsulates Ivkovic’s artistic temperament. In recent years, that temperament has increasingly found devoted followers all around the globe. Simply put, Ivkovic has become a staple of the European club circuit; despite his many years in the humble confines of Salon des Amateurs, he’s proven to be just as comfortable at celebrated nightspots like De School (Amsterdam), Berghain (Berlin), Nitsa (Barcelona), Kaiku (Helsinki), Sub Club (Glasgow), Phonox (London), Fold (London), Corsica Studios (London), The White Hotel (Manchester), Mutabor (Moscow), Pacha (Ibiza), Blitz (Munich), Zukunft (Zurich), Concrete (Paris), Lux Fragil (Lisbon), Robert Johnson (Frankfurt), Circoloco (Ibiza) and others too numerous to list. He’s no stranger to touring either, having taken extended DJ trips to Canada (September 2017), Asia (July 2018), Australia (January 2018), Brazil and Colombia (March 2018), USA (2019, April 2022), Brazil (September 2022). Even the festival circuit has come calling, inviting Ivkovic and his inventive rhythms to large-scale events like Primavera Sound, Unsound, World Minimal Music, Houghton, Strange Sounds from Beyond, Dekmantel, Flow, TodaysArt, Robot, Waking Life, Terraforma, Dancity, Positive Education, Elevate, Love International, Dimensions, Kala, Sziget, The Crave … and that’s just a partial list. Still, despite all of these international adventures, Ivkovic has kept his focus on music, especially the dark and often psychedelic sounds that lurk in its unexplored corners. Each month, he distilled some of that love into Lunatic Love Songs, a much-loved and sonically borderless program on Red Bull Radio. He still does it with his frequent contributions for Noods Radio, Kiosk Radio or Oddity Radio to name a few. Whether he’s broadcasting on the radio or piloting the dancefloor, Ivkovic is someone who applies a curatorial mindset and a deep love of music to all of his creative exploits. Yes, he’s a DJ, but he’s so much more than that; he’s a storyteller, a connoisseur and, most importantly, an artist. • Yaya

Yaya grows up in Torino, in the resonant Babylon of his home, where the rhythms of his father’s, singer and leading voice of the ensemble M’bamina, drums prophesied a multi-ethnic Italy. During the 70’s the sound of M’bamina spread an exotic afro-beat sound in the smoky clubs of the cold Torino of those days. As a boy Yaya grew up surrounded by the sound of the albums released by one of the pioneer band of afro sound in Italy. Since his teen age, Yaya approaches with the rhythm performing as a drummer around the city. It is when at the age of 17 he purchases a pair of decks, that his blood’s rhythm takes an electronic turmoil driving him to house music: Yaya begins then playing at clubs and parties of the flourished techno-house scene of Turin. At 18, he lands for the first time in the island of music hedonism, Ibiza; his vivacity lead him to play at several afterhours and his musical assertiveness allowed him to be noticed by the entrepreneurs of the white island’s big electronic circus..

  • ZOTS

Moscow underground scene long-player and Arma17 resident. For more then a decade lasts his commitment to music. Sound engineering or sound design or sound in art - every step of a sonic journey through the life is about that. Dance electronic music scene waves from the very beginning of 90s till now in one click can be compressed and extracted into a confident yet quiet eccentric personal style. It was a minimal school to inspire and empower his sound production which gained its individual place on such imprints as Nervmusic and Arma. But continuous relationship with music pushes the limits of artistic expression down to eclectic approach especially when talking about records selection. Lately it was an experimental zone - an attempt to deconstruct the genre features and elaborate plastic sonic environment within a vinyl bag. Quirky tech-house with breakbeat next to electro hinge injected with elegant acid drops united by a peculiar artistic taste.

  • Z@p

̸BIOGRAPHY Z@P - House & Techno DJ/Producer from Montevideo, Uruguay. Now based in Berlin In Fernando Zapico, one can find a rare combination: a producer with a talent for creating timeless pieces of electronic dance music, who at the same time is able to shine bright as a selector and club DJ. What is it about Z@p that has made him such an idiosyncratic spirit in a sea of fresh DJs and producers emerging on a daily basis? One could look at his background; after all, being native to Uruguay, a grail of modern dance music with a rich legacy to learn from, definitely helps. Yet a strong infatuation with club culture and electronic music since the early 2000´s in the Montevideo scene has fostered him to develop and progress on a consistent basis. This same fascination led him to meet and become affiliated with the crew behind Phonotheque, a club and collective of which he is now a lifelong resident. Yet Nando is not just a representation of a culture but a representation of himself, of his edge. Perhaps this edge is the way to look at his music. Operating within a framework of conventional dance music, Z@p, as a DJ, is universally aligned to deliver his signature sound in various settings for various crowds. The beats are all-consuming, tension builds and releases organically, and there is not much left but to dance the night away under his skillful lead. But once you get sucked into the atmosphere, dissonance, carefully placed disruptions, otherworldly basslines, resonating acid, bended vocals, and seemingly contradicting narratives appear and start taking you on a whole other trip. Listening to an experienced and well-versed DJ express himself and utilize his skills, you’re bound to go on a layered and complex journey that is both captivating, empowering, and thought-provoking. Since 2015, the Uruguayan started touring Europe more and more frequently until 2018 when he finally bit the bullet and moved to Berlin permanently. Nowadays, he is a resident of both Phonotheque and Cartulis Music, two institutions pushing electronic music forward in the Americas and Europe, respectively. He continues to tour and be a frequent guest at some of the best clubs in the world, yet somehow he manages to be a tour de force when it comes to production, consistently putting out tracks that electronic music fans all around the world treasure and appreciate. These releases under some of the most influential labels of our time, such as My Own Jupiter, Time Passages, and Cabaret Recordings just to name a few, have set new standards for contemporary dance music to aspire to. ̸SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY Signal Kommt / Basic Moves 13 / 2020 Z@p / Brutalismo EP / My Own Jupiter 2019 Z@P / Mayday / Cabaret Recordings / 2019 Z@P / Phonotools Vol.1 / Phonotheque Recordings / 2018 Z@P / Tracid EP / Cartulis Music / CRTL006 / 2018 Z@P / Sonic Utopia EP / Melliflow / 2016
